Last week I was in Guatemala and stayed at an amazing place on Lake Atitlan where I took a series of pictures in hopes of having Photoshop auto-align and auto-blend them together. The thought was good, but didn't exactly work. Apparently my year old 2.66 MacBook Pro with 4GB RAM isn't powerful enough to finish the task. I was able to auto-align them, after about 10 minutes worth of beachballs, but when I attempt to auto-blend I get a dialogue saying that I don't have enough RAM to complete the request.
So is there anyone out there with a computer more powerful than mine who also has Photoshop CS3 or higher and is willing to run a few processes for me? I'll be happy to send the 300MB PSD file. Please let me know here or PM me. Thanks! |

How many pictures are we talking? How big are each of them?

Four pictures taken on a Rebel XSi. They're 4272 x 2848 and are about 4.5 MB each. The PSD where they are auto-aligned is just shy of 300 MB.
To be honest, I'm not sure why MBP can't process the Photoshop job. I've bumped Photoshop's RAM limits to 100% and it still gives me trouble. |

I can try on Beast (i7 920 Hacintosh with 6GB) for you if you'd like. I've never stitched before but could give it a shot.

By offering Photoshop 100% of your RAM, you leave none for the operating system: this ensures poor performance. With 4 GB of RAM I wouldn't go over about 75% (less if you want to be able to keep other apps like Safari open).

I usually keep the RAM slider set to around 70% but tried to bump it up after the task failed a few times. When I pushed it to 100% it actually only allowed 3GB of RAM to Photoshop so I guess it's a bit of a misnomer. |

It took about one second to complete. Pegged one thread on my CPU but didn't spread the love over all 8. Wonder how a Mac Pro would handle it CPU wise. Anyway, I'll PM you the link for you to download the result.

Thank you so much. I wonder why I had such an issue. Oh well, thanks!

My girlfriend is in Guatemala at the moment and she's leaving for Lake Atitlan in a few days so I would very much like to see the picture. Could you post it?

Now that Turtle has blended it for me, I want to crop and play with the color a bit. But when that's done I'll be happy to post a version of it.

Admittedly I'm not that great when it comes to coloring on Photoshop, but I'm happy with what turned out. The link takes you to Flickr. Let me know if you want a bigger copy as actual size is 12k pixels wide. Thanks again, Turtle, for your help. Now I just need to find a place that will print it the size I want. |

Wow! Great, beautiful, etc! Colors are great too, don't worry about those skills :-) I would really like to see a larger version.

Glad you like it. I was very happy with the way it turned out. I used Blue Cube Imaging to print the image. It was $15.50 shipped for the 10x30" image and it turned out so well. My picture's aspect ratio was much larger than a 10x30 so there's about a 1.5" white border on the top and bottom of the picture but it looks great in the frame. Like I said, I'm pretty happy with it. Thanks again to Turtle for the processing power.
I'll PM you the link to the full size. |
