Anyone got guesses on when OS 11 might come and what it might have? After all, it has been what like 5 years now for OSX? -- much longer than previous generations of Mac OS (tho yes it was much bigger leap ahead too). But now MS gets to benefit from the follower's position of being able to copying everything people like about competitor and then building on top of it. Thus, this Vista thing they are coming out with will probably be pretty decent and in many ways at least appear to be more advanced than OSX to many people.

So anyway, anyone got ideas regarding what's in store as far as next major overhaul (as opposed to these OSX.x new versions of OSX?

I believe Jobs has stated that OS X would be the platform for about 15 years. So, yeah. Whether that specifically means having 10 as the major version number, or just being some Mac OS - NeXTSTEP hybrid, is another question.

It's waaay too early to talk about OS XI.

There's really nothing but baseless speculation to go on.

But yeah, it's close to a decade away. Note that the the point releases have slowed down with Leopard.

OS X version 10.0-10.4 = one point release a year
OS X version 10.5-10.9 = one point release every two years

That puts us at, oh, right around 15 years for Mac OS X. Just like Jobs said.

(Of course, there's no law saying that OS X has to go up to version 10.9, but hey - going with the current pattern, that's where it ends after about 15 years.)

So...it'll be at least half a decade before we start to get the slightest idea what OS XI will be like.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

We had a thread like this a short while ago:

I'm locking this thread for the same reason that I locked that one:
