My sister needs new earbuds (the in-ear ones by Apple, as opposed to those crappy default ones), hopefully we'll get a price cut for those

Here's 2006 discounts:

$11 off for 2GB iPod nano
$21 off for 4GB, 8GB iPod nano, and 30GB iPod
$31 off for 80GB iPod
$101 off for MacBook and iMac

So pretty much on par with last year's discounts.

The sale prices are now up. No really huge discounts on hardware.

Think I'll wait for MWSF.
I think I'll get more discounts on previous-gen machines once the new ones are announced.

Always. After all, Apple dumps most of them in the refurbish shop the day after a announcement...

Snore. Apple rarely has a sale that can actually be called a sale. It's more like "extra markup removed pricing event."

To use yet another car analogy (we just love those!), that's like hoping to get BMW's new 1-Series - or, better yet, Nissan's new GT-R - below (or anywhere near) list. Apple just isn't that kind of car company, and the iMac just isn't that kind of car.

There's a place for the Hyundai-style companies of the world, with "everything must go!" weekend sales events and new Accents for $5,999 (provided you're a military veteran and you currently have a Hyundai in Certified Pre-Owned condition, of course) - but that isn't Apple. I'm not saying that's a good thing or a bad thing - it just is.

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong

True enough, but don't you just wish Apple could just give back just a little more on one day? One day out of the whole frickin' year. Sure, not $500 off but perhaps $250. The thinking is that $100 doesn't really make a dent in the wallet when you're already spending a grand. But bump it up to 25% and it's significant.

Those sitting on the fence would have no excuses. Mom and Dad would pick one up for the kids. Small businesses would snap one up before year end.
Apple would still have their margins and pad their quarter with I'm sure would be great single day of laptops/iMacs sold.

Not really. Deep discounts and frequent sales seriously hurt your brand. That's why it's so difficult to find premium brands of all kinds on sale, from clothes to cars, and why brands which make utilitarian products with little or no unique desirability are so often found on sale.

He wasn't asking about frequent sales but rather this one day of the year when people put things on sale, hell I even got 2 Black Friday offers from Porsche. As for premium clothing, there is a store in Woodbury Commons that sells clothing by Armani, Dolce & Gabbana, Stella McCartney, Burberry, etc.

If Apple did a better sale on some items on this one day they would make up the discount in volume sales which if done correctly leads to more long-ten customers.

I thought yesterday’s offerings from Apple were a joke, and I own a MacBook Pro, AppleTV, two iPhones and a half dozen iPods. Offer me a real deal and maybe I would have opened my wallet instead of closing my browser.

Maybe they'd rather wait until you need the product and get their regular margin than get it a little early and a much-reduced margin. Selling higher volume at reduced margin has obviously never been the Apple way.

Exactly. I'm not saying I don't wish Apple would have massive sales for Black Friday and Boxing Day and Tuesday - obviously, I'd like to spend as little as possible on my Apple gear too. But that's not "the Apple way," as you put it, and I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. Apple is, at the end of the day, a premium brand. And they're going to stay that way, no matter how much message board denizens wish otherwise.

Besides. You could always buy Apple stock, and get all of those high margins back.

I can't believe peeps are/were actually up in arms over the Black Friday discounts. Let me put it like this Apple owes us nothing except the high quality computing experience we have all come to love. Anything they decide to discount is a plus and we as consumers should be grateful. It's funny the day after Thanksgiving and peeps are bitching about wanting more of a discount! I figure if you can't afford Apple hardware at the regular price points maybe you should consider getting a 400.00 laptop from Best Buy and hacking it to run OS X. IMHO

I could technically say that Apple puts most of their products on sale everyday for some people. If you are a student they have the "Educational" discount, which gets you about the same prices if not more than what the Black Friday sale was (We used that on everything except the Computer & Airport Extreme). So, I don't think sales hurt a brand, they just don't want to lose profit.

I think you got that backwards. There is a tipping point as to when consumers will backlash against any company including Apple. One doesn't have to go too far back to remember how well the Apple Cube did.

Plus no one (at least not me) is "up in arms" over anything. It's really about how Apple begins to appear as a greed corporation. Profit is good...but it's all about PR and perception. A one day real sale will not hurt Apple in the least. And when a company such as MacMall can offer a MBP for $264 less than Apple on cyber Monday, you know their margins are just fine.

I'm not sure what the cube has to do with anything when it comes to product discounts. OK so it wasn't a successful product but it pretty much is what Apple represents as a computer manufacture. Simple yet cutting edge design paired with a solid OS for the best computing experience, which many people bought and now considered to be somewhat of an collectors item.

As far as the discounts goes I'm simply saying that 100.00 is a nice discount, is 264.00 better yea, but I would be more than happy with the 100.00 discount if that was the best I could find. I just think it's funny that people always find something to complain about when certain expectations aren't met.

I'm sure he does, seeing how I've never smelled his shit altough I'm sure it stinks just like your shit does. I was simply saying that the cube was in line with Apple's design philosophy even though it was overpriced. Why do you think you'll find a Mac in MOMA? I guess they were smelling some of SJ's shit too huh?
