My Macbook Pro had about 60 GB of free space when I went to bed last night. When I woke up, there was a popup that said my startup disk was full and some applications had been paused because there was no more virtual memory.
I quit everything and restarted, and after logging in I had a blank blue screen and no applications, including Finder, were running. I couldn't access the Dock or Sportlight, and the only thing in my menu bar was Dropbox. I zapped the PRAM, which didn't help. Same result. I restarted in Safe Mode, and everything seemed OK, except for the fact that I was missing 60 GB of space. I deleted some nonessential files just in case. The SMART status of the HD is verified and I repaired permissions. I haven't tried rebooting again. In addition, the iPod I had plugged into the MacBook no longer works, and iTunes repeatedly says that it's corrupt, even after restoring it. What the heck is going on? |

Check your log files. One of them went nuts more than likely.
Disk Inventory X is also a great app. to scan your drive and look for huge files. http://www.derlien.com/ Google is your frenemy. Caveat Emptor - Latin for tough titty I tend to interpret things in the way that's most hilarious to me |

+1 for Disk Inventory X. It's always my go-to tool for a full drive. (There's also a Windows equivalent, WinDirStat, which I use on Windows servers at work all the time.)

The krb5kdc folder in /private/var/log is 65 gb, but I'm guessing I can't just delete that...

Go ahead and delete the massive log files, see if they come back or not. Won't hurt to wipe the logs.

I can't cd to the folder to see what files to delete, thoug. Should I try something other than sudo cd /private/var/log/krb5kdc?

From the terminal:
sudo su cd /private/var/log/krb5kdc |

You can delete from within Disk Inventory X normally also.
