My friend Charlie in Toledo has this website that he bought from a registrar a long time ago, when Arthur Treacher's was still over in Franklin Park Mall.
He says that he pointed his domain to the nameservers of a hosting company for his website (which was a review of Arthur Treacher's restaurant, in Franklin Park Mall). Charlie's web host was bought by a larger web host a while back and now he's not sure where to go to change his DNS settings, like TXT and A and C and FISH and so on. Where do you suppose he should actually look? He says the setting for DNS is greyed out on his registrar's website, which is what led him to this confusion in the first place. Thanks! ... |

Check what the name servers are. For example:
dig ns applenova.com This will return a bunch of lines, some of which say "NS" in them: ; <<>> DiG 9.10.6 <<>> applenova.com ns ;; global options: +cmd ;; Got answer: ;; ->>HEADER<<- opcode: QUERY, status: NOERROR, id: 993 ;; flags: qr rd ra; QUERY: 1, ANSWER: 5, AUTHORITY: 0, ADDITIONAL: 11 ;; OPT PSEUDOSECTION: ; EDNS: version: 0, flags:; udp: 4000 ;; QUESTION SECTION: ;applenova.com. As chucker showed, you can find where the domain is managed with "dig" or even "whois" from Terminal.
If you really want to help your friend, you can have them point their DNS to a third party that isn't the hosting provider. Cloudflare is a good option or something like Hurricane DNS. These create a separation from registrar and host. Personally I'm a fan of Cloudflare because they build in protection for free. Then whenever your friend wants to update DNS they go to that one place and update DNS records. Louis L'Amour, “To make democracy work, we must be a nation of participants, not simply observers. VERY HELPFUL!! Thank you both.
Charlie looked it up and even though his old web host is owned by the new web host, that lookup shows the name of the old web host! It's very fascinating, for Charlie, you know. ... |

To give you a concrete example of how AppleNova's DNS works…
At the registrar, where the actual domain name ownership is bought and paid for, I have the option of defining custom DNS servers, and that's where I specify the ns#.linode.com addresses. In my case, the registrar is not the web host; it's a different company entirely. Even though the web servers live in Linode, I don't manage ownership of the domain name through Linode. Then over in Linode's console, I define the actual contents of the DNS records, including the mail (MX) record and a variety of subdomain (A/AAAA and CNAME) records. This relationship may be a little weird because until recently Alcimedes owned the domain and managed the registrar side of things, but since I was running the actual servers, I had to manage the DNS records closer to the web host. Now that I have all the infinity stones, and since I'm also considering migrating away from Linode due to recent price hikes, I may end up using yet another third party service like turtle mentioned.
