It's early prostate cancer.
Got the call from the Doc this afternoon at 4:44pm Two areas are affected so he wants to take the whole thing. We've got to do tests to make sure that it hasn't already spread. That's about all I know right now. I'm a little scared, but mostly haven't quite see the big picture yet. Don't want to be weepy though, that is SO uncool. And I've been working on a special poo project, which I hope to launch sometime this year, so I have that to live for ... |

That does indeed suck. The word "Early" is a good thing, though.

That's really awful, Drew. They say that every man will get it, if he lives long enough. But 41? That's not fair.
My dad was diagnosed a year ago, and had surgery. He's 72, and they're optimistic that they caught it in time. They have some real high-tech razzle-dazzle surgical techniques now that can have you up and about in no time. How did you find out, were you having symptoms, or just a random check-up? I'm 46, and feeling a little nervous now. |

Damn man.
So at this point you're sure it's cancer and not just, say, elevated PSA readings? I remember my dad had a bit of a scare when his PSA reading hit 6 (it's supposed to stay under 4). My grandfather died of prostate cancer, but his doctor was a quack who didn't warn us even when his PSA readings went above 20. Apparently prostate cancer is easy to treat if caught early. Best of luck to you! |

Sorry to hear the news Drew. I will say that my Dad was diagnosed with it and had his prostate removed. All looks good now since it's been years that they removed it.
I wouldn't be too scared (Easy to say from this vantage point I know), this cancer treatment has come a long way and when caught early seems to really minimize catastrophic effects. Damn drew! My father-in-law is a prostate cancer survivor, and yes, early is good. Be sure that you discuss *all* the options on surgery, some are more, um, destructive than others. There are a couple of nerves you want to make sure are preserved at all costs.

Holy crap. I hope that since it's early it's treatable and that you come out as well as possible. I will send good energy your way.

Sorry to hear that Drew. Fingers and toes crossed here for you and yours.
It's been on my mind a lot recently. Seems like everywhere you turn someone is getting struck with something. I'd like to repeat a question from earlier.. Did you feel symptoms or was it found in a routine check up? Drew, man, I am sorry to hear that.
A second opinion is certainly called for... Let's hope the cancer has stayed in prostate... and goddamn, cap'n, you gotta work that thing more... |

I hope for the best for you and sorry to hear about your news. Good job on getting checked though. Lots of men don't think about their health so you've improved your odds and might improve ours by being brave enough to share.

Jesus man. That sucks. But, as others have said, they luckily caught it early and you should have no problem bouncing back.

Oh drew no, please no. I hoped it was just a hypothetical question when I saw the thread title.
Second opinion? Yep. Definite on that one. Please don't quote me on this and it probably depends on the type, but I thought it was one of the malignancies with a generally better prognosis. I have some recollection from a friend's dad who had it that there's quite a lot of argument amongst medico's about whether to operate, in older males at least, because it tends to be very slow growing. Anyway, you can read, and I'm sure you are, everything that's available about it. A little weepy is fine I think. Not uncool at all. Don't forget your stress-relieving koala ears. All my love and thoughts. |
