How does Apple's USB Keyboard work?

My dad is having KB issues (possibly USB issues as well, don't know yet) and he's plugging his mouse into the USB ports on the KB, I told him to try plugging the mouse into the ports on the computer, just as a trouble shooting measure, but he says you're supposed to use the USB ports on the KB. I doubt this, I mean of course you can, but I doubt it's mandatory!

Anyway, the USB ports on the KB, do they work as a hub, or do they have their own chipset in the KB? I'm pretty sure they're working as a hub but just want to make sure.

Thanks.

The keyboard just acts as a hub. Nothing fancy.

That's what I thought.

So it's fair to say if the USB ports on the computer are bad, the ones on the KB are going to have issues as well, since they're just piggy-backing on the same chipset.

Furthermore, the keyboard can possibly introduce NEW issues since it doesn't provide as much power as the computer's ports. Sometimes, when you connect a device to a keyboard USB port, it'll give you a "low power" notice and you'll have to plug the device into the computer itself instead.

Yes, I considered that too, but I was thinking that a mouse wouldn't cause any power issues, as opposed to a MFP or something like that.

Anyways, thanks guys.

*runs off to tell daddy I told you so*

One last thing:

Does Apple recommend plugging the mouse into the USB ports on the KB?

Just want to cover my tracks, my iMac has BT KB & mouse so it's never been an issue for me.

They basically require it (on some models at least) since the Apple mouse has a very short cord. It really doesn't matter, and some mice might even have problems if they're plugged into the keyboard, but Apple's mouse is fine on the keyboard (again, with a cord so short it's basically required if you have a Mini or a Power Mac).
