Engine Joe, is that 2x 20" monitors, or 2 x 23"? Just interested as I'm buying a g5 and monitors for work next week.

Bryson -

It's 2x20" monitors. Economically, it made the most sense to me: there was no way I could afford 2 23" displays, and 2 20" displays gives me far more screen real estate than one 23" (341.8 sq. in. as opposed to 226.1 sq. in.). And 2 20"s cost only $100 more than one 23". Easy decision!

That said, if you can afford 2 23" displays... (drool)

well I had the same delema at teh begining, however it was easly solved when I talk till I could not talk anymore. Althought YES it is more real estate, A higher resolution, 1080i and lastly it is HD, totally worth it. I have two 23"'s and love them. I think that it depends on What you are going to be using the system for, it will matter in the future in what you use it for. If you see yourself needing HD and higher Res. that I would say bite the bullet and get the two 23'' displays. However if you are not making money off of your sysem, 20" will be fine.

Thanks. I guess I'm going home with more from those Canon Digital seminars than just a full stomach thanks to their buffet tables.

Well, all three of your points are actually the same one since HD = higher resolution than SD. That's all High Definition is - more pixels. And the 23" model is actually 1080p (that's a plus, though).

That said, the 20" is 1050 lines of resolution and thus is HD compliant (since a lot of what is called HD is in fact 720p). "True" HD is 1080p, sure, but 720p is as High Definition as many HDTV sets out there.

I also don't understand why someone who is 'making money' off their system needs the 23" models musicians, web designers, and writers don't necessarily need 1080p to do their work.

Again... that still doesn't explain why everyone who makes money off their computers need 1080p or higher...?

Actually, I disagree. These are the people who are trying to get their images and videos as good looking as possible want the best screen they can get.

Imagine photo editing on an old, faded dark screen out of the Win95 Era I'll call it.

It's the same type of comparison with comparing your regular screen to a HD one.

Argh. I'm not saying that people don't have reasons to want 1080p + screens!

Yeesh!

All I'm saying is people doing work other than HD video - now follow me here - don't necessarily need that scale of resolution. If you're working with standard definition video, having a screen that has more than 1080 lines of resolution will do you no good. You can have it if you want it, but you don't need it.

The person said you are fine with 20" screens so long as you don't make money off your system. That is patently untrue - I make money off my system as a musician, and having 1080+ is unnecessary. That was all I was trying to point out - that the statement was overbroad. Note the examples I used (even in the part you quoted). There are plenty of professional applications for using computers that don't require 1080p HD. Just as there are plenty that do.

Can we drop this now? It's a totally tangental discussion to the point of this thread, and frankly it sounds more like a communication issue amongst the posters than an actual substantive debate.

(edit: added smiley because I meant this concilatorially and in reading it back I realized it actually sounded fairly exhasperated)

People like dealing with generalities, when someone says they can stick with 20" if they don't do professional work, it's a small market they are discussing. Plus people assume that since Macs are used, it's either video, audio, or graphics work being done on the platform.

Either way the argument is flawed, heck I'm even thinking about 2 30s for my home lab.

It's not too pretty but we just bought the place a few months ago and renovations are going very slowly. At least the computer is pretty. It also seems that it's time to throw out the old cigarette packs. Yikes.

Just upgraded to a PM G5 2x2.3 GHz. On top of the computer, I have two Icy Box 260 FW Drives which contain my old ATA drives. On the desk is a Canon S900 printer, my Iiyama 17.4" main monitor and a Benq 17" secondary monitor:

You talkin' to me?

There pretty nice. They're just a stop gap though, a while back I had to move everything out of my room for some remodeling and at some point along the journey the sub to my nice kiplisch speakers got dropped or kicked or drop-kicked, hell I don't know, but they broke. I am saving up for so many different things right now they are on the bottom of my list.

My desk is just two shelving units from Targe' and the door from my closet. It works really well. I route my cords through the doorknob hole. I also haven't had time to order an iCurve for my powerbook so right now it is sitting on a 2" binder so that it sits on an angle, the wireles keyboard fits right under it so that it is out of my when I am doing homework. What you can't see all over my desk, is the 15 million pounds of pencil eraser shavings from this semester. I have never done so many mathematical proofs in my life. I can't wait to be done with this part of my major so that I can finish up my teaching cert. The teaching cert. part is easy, a buch of classes where I have to write longwinded opinons, and since they are opinions it doesn't really matter what I write(within reason).

There is a framed photo on the wall just above the desk of Mont Blanc, don't panic! I'm not a big fan of posters - I have two in my whole flat, and they are both on doors, one is signed by a band, the other is a different unsigned poster by the same band.

And yes, the set of drawers is from Ikea, ideal for student flats! A lot of stuff in my flat is, but strangely the desk, chair and CD rack are all from elsewhere.

I think I am ordering an iMac next week (unless the Mac mini updated blows me away) so I'll post a new picture soon with my new setup, and a much fuller CD rack - been on a bit of a CD buying binge!

Well I finally got around to getting a media card reader so I was able to get the pics off my camera. So this is my Mini Set up...

This is my living room MediaCenter...

My bedroom Laptop...

Daughters School Desk...

My network setup...

And Last but not least is my main desk which is my home office. Never mind my mess. I actually hate
the mess but choose not to take the time to fix it yet. I'll get there soon, but thought I would post my
pic now. So here it is...

Hope that isn't too much for one post but I just got excited about how easy the memory card reader works
with iPhoto and I followed advice from a forum search I did to get Panic FTP. After all that I just
couldn't let it pass. Enjoy!

I have to say it is a very rugged TV. It has crossed the Atlantic Ocean twice and down to the Caribbean more times
than I can count with really rough seas. I think this one is about 9 years old. It is also the ONLY TV in my house and
it doesn't even have cable hooked up, only the MediaCenter.

This is what a tidy desk looks like...

My desk is almost always this tidy, only things I am using at present get left out. My new system looks better without lots of clutter I think. The old iBook has been replaced with a 1.42GHz Mac mini, 20in display, JBL Speakers and Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse. The iPod mini and the printer are next to be updated... holding out for a 5th gen iPod, and might get a wireless printer now that the bit where my printer used to sit is now taken up by my subwoofer!
