Cool, I love this line. Fitting for AN.

holy crap, if you're in the US, don't D/L from a US mirror. It's said ot take 2 hours!

France is done already.

Funny, the first comment on the thread:

My download went really quickly [used a French http mirror last night]. I'm still waiting for the read-ahead cache/buffer to be implemented. Most of my video is on a samba share and can't play with VLC without skipping. Until they get this sorted, I'm stuck with MPlayer. Unless this is some obscure VLC setting that I haven't found.

[ranty]
Neverwithstanding it's standards support VLC is still the same piece of crap software which keeps on spitting useless error notifications in my face after each dropped frame.

It should however be off by default.
For this and many other odd little reasons I really can't get myself to like VLC.
I am someone who strongly believes in the idea that about 50% of development efforts should be appointed to interface and usability research, design and implementation.
I'm pretty sure thosa are an afterthought in the VLC development cycle.

(I could of course stop complaining and decide to do it myself, which is sort of the cool thing about open source projects.)

It's one of those apps like a swiss army knife, or a leatherman..
You don't walk aound with it on a key ring (unless you are an uber geek or a red-neck), but you do have one, and you often resort to it..
I've grabbed my copy and put it in the same dusty patch in my utilities folder that the previous version used to inhabit.

Oh, and I've skinned the icon (again) because it's crap!

Oh yeah, the interface bites ass - it's definitely a Windows/Linux app first and foremost, and it shows.

Personally, I'd like that error dialog to show up once per file, and that's it, instead of the all or nothing approach it has now.

When it pops up, there will be a checkbox for "Don't show me this again" Check it, then dismiss the dialog.

True, but ticking the checkbox only applies while for the remaining time VLC is open... unless there's a permanent option somewhere?
