That does happen all the time on my Intel MBP... curious how M1 handles that. My mom has an M1 Air so I can't really test it on there for y'all. It is very silent.

Yeah, I have the 16" i9 and that sucker gets LOUD when I'm using Google Hangouts or Intellij.

Compiling code will usually put it in jet-engine mode pretty quick.

Yeah, I was wondering. The Intel models will spin up and make a lot of racket, but I still have yet to hear an M1 make any noise at all.

You think Intel was bad, the G4’s and G5’s were smoking. Every Mac I’ve owned, other than an early PowerMac G4, has been noisy under load. I doubt the M1 is any better when you really put it to work, then again even at full load it’s not exactly going to suck power from the wall the way traditional desktop computers do.

I haven't heard the fans on the M1 MBP at all since I've had it.

My wife was using a 2018 MBP for work and that thing would kill the fans during anything even remotely tasking, even using Outlook would kick on the fan, yet alone Teams or Zoom.

Now however, with the M1, I don't think the fan has kciedk on at all, and if it has, then it's been super quiet.

Mind testing something? Put Prime95 on there and run it for a little to see how well it does but most importantly, how loud the fans get when the CPU stays at 100% for a while.

Oh, it just dawned on me that you likely have an Apple Watch too and can use the DB meter to see how loud it gets with something other than a guess too!

I did! I just need my son to get this project done so I can get him one. I think I saw where Amazon has been dropping the price enough that it is a better deal to buy new though. I'm actually pretty shocked and the price drops being seen already.

Couldn’t you get an education discount?

I can, but the Veteran discount ends up with less red tape. You just verify your government status (via id.me) and then it gets you the discounts with Apple.

I have Macs Fan Control app on all of my computers so I just used that for this.

Ambient room noise was 35 db and when I turned the fan on the MBP all the way up to full blast, it went to 45 db with my watch held right about the keyboard.

Definitely noticeable, but that was the first time I've heard the fan come on on that computer since I got it.

Nice. Thanks. That is pretty quiet overall. I'll have test out my MBP (i7) and see what it sounds like to my Watch later today.
