Wow. So I just downloaded a 645 mb file (iso for Ubuntu 5.10) in about 1 minute. On a regular download, that would take about 2 hours with my connection. Anyone else have an uber fast bittorrent story?

BitTorrent Client: BitTorrent 4.1.3 Beta

Edit: Just upgraded to 4.1.4 - it has a new search feature built in, haven't had a chance to test it for speed yet

Sometimes ... things that are expensive ... are worse.

From slow speed and Bittorrent:

By its very nature, BitTorrent can offer widely varying speeds. The speed you get basically depends on one simple ratio:

(#_people_sharing * average_upload_speed) / #_people_downloading

Most people with residential broadband services have terrible upload speeds. Typically the maximum upload speed is 1/10 of the download speed. So, you need a whole lot of people to be sharing a file in order for you to get a good download speed. When you account for "leechers" who disconnect as soon as a download is complete, you start to see why the speeds start to suffer.

Yonsey, you may simply be trying to download something that doesn't have a lot of people sharing (or seeding) the file. You're probably not doing anything wrong directly.

I hit above 450KB/s once. I've never been able to get that kind of speed since.

On a popular torrent, I will easily max out my downstream bandwidth of 5000 kbits/sec.

speed depends on seeds right? well when i download things i look for high # of seeders but i still get shit for speed...it has nothing to do with the downloading app right?

The client does matter actually. There are different things programs do to increase download speed. I've always recommended Azureus, ugly, but amazingly powerful as far as bittorrent apps go.

A high number of seeds doesn't necessarily mean a fast download. You neeed a lot of people that have a lot of open slots, that don't have their uploads capped to crappy speeds.

I'm lucky if I get 40-50Kbps, though I always upload around 80-110Kbps.

does higher upload speeds carry over to faster download speeds?

Well you should keep in mind that you uploading fast actually helps you download faster as well.

You should set your upload speed to 85% of your total. I found that is you reach your ISP limit, you actually loose performance. Also check for NAT problems.

My max was 350K on a slashdotted torrent.

^^ One more quality post from the desk of Ebby. ^^

i switched to azureus and i like it the best so far and im getting a lil better download speed but i read something that said something about changing your port # to somehting other then 6881 and they give you a site that can so you open ports and a site that suggests which ports to pick but so far every port i picked that they said was available was close. do i have a NAT problem or is it something with my router (AP extreme)? how do i fix this because as far as i assume and anyone can correct me on this, that if i can get a better port and get my guys on azureus to have green faces, ill get better download speeds. i also changed my upload speed to 150kb/s, is that sufficient enough???

I think the 85% of upload thing Ebby was talking about is a real thing. It's my theory that since network traffic is more than just sending things someplace, but communication, that if you inundate the line with sending, it leaves no room to communicate. Simplified theory of course, but you get the idea.

As for azureus, in preferences (options), under transfer, you'll see some options. I'd recommend checking at least the last checkbox that says "Prioritize most completed files". Not sure of the default, but don't be afraid to increase the maximum number of connections either. It's greedy, but it will help you...in general, the more people you can connect to, the better

what about my port/NAT problem?

Edit: am i actually having a port/NAT problem or is it a portforwarding problem? i went to the azureus website troubleshoot and it explained it but it exactly how to solve it let alone how to solve it on osx and airport extreme...can anyone help me please? green face is a need, ha

I'm downloading the Photoshop CS2 tryout right now, and it's DL at more then 600 KB/sec. This isn't a torrent.

I thought torrents were supposed to be faster?

You thought they were supposed to be faster? *sigh*

Look up. I just explained it 15 posts ago. It's a very simple matter.

Actually bittorrent's appeal isn't necessarily it's speed, as much as it's speed when dealing with popular large downloads.

Bittorrent releases stress from a single line and disburses it among all the leechers...and is lessened even more when people become solely seeders.

I doubt even many commercial servers could have supported the fast speeds of large files when OS 10.4 was leaked through a chinese tracker. Easily 10,000 downloads within the first few hours, and the file was ~2.5GB.

BT is most effective on popular, large files. That is where it shines. Your results may vary, but it also could be your getting your torrents from the wrong trackers

I have yet to see any of those numbers and I'm connected through one of our campus's two OC3 lines with a 100 Mb connection. I find that using my maximum bandwidth I clog connections and I get like 20 Kb/s downloads. If I cap it at around 100 Kb/s up I can make it into the mid 80's but I've never done anything much higher. Now downloading from Apple's servers @ 4.7 MegaBytes/s is nice.

In your router setup , open a port range like 6881-6890 and point them you your LAN IP address. Also make sure to allow the same ports through your OS X firewall. There should be a NAT tester somewhere in the program too.
