Ah, OK. Thanks for letting me know.

Coincidently, a couple minutes ago I ran across a post at TUAW that made a reference to the size discrepancy.

Anyone notice that the size of the picture on Apple's homepage, the "welcome to '07" is 1 pixel from being perfect 720p resolution? Could it be an HDTV from Apple at MWSF?

That would be pretty sweet!

I think he's saying that it's roughly 16:9.

Definitly on the top five list of the most ridiculous/pointless/absurd Apple speculation I've ever read/heard/thought.

Gee, I wouldn't put it past Apple to sell a TV to go with their upcoming iTV device but it's stretching it to say because the image on apple.com is roughly 16 x 9, that it's a hint.

It's especially ridiculous when you consider that this image is still roughly the same size and proportions that the front page graphic has had for about five years.

Yup.

Furthermore, why would an Apple TV be sweet? The HDTV market is very solid as is. Sony, Samsung, and Panasonic make great sets, and there is no way Apple could make them better (at best, they would be on par) or cheaper.

Logic, logic, logic. Logic is the beginning of wisdom, Valeris, not the end.

But, but...they would be made out of brushed aluminum! How many HDTVs do you know that are made out of that?

OK, so yeah, I'm going with the majority here...not bloody likely.

Anyone else going to the Keynote morning after next to see up-close-and-personally which of these many rumors pans out? I'm going to skim through this thread, take down a list of every single rumor/guess, and check them off as they're announced...should keep me busy for an hour or so before I take off for SF tomorrow.

Maybe it would have "iTV" built in so you wouldn't need a set-top version.

I'll be glad when we have a real name for this new iTV thingamabob.

On a somewhat related and amusing note, someone submitted to TUAW a link to a page containing photos from a recent shoot for an Audi commercial, one of which contains a phone-like/iPod-like object sitting on top of a paper tray. Hmmm.

Except that one commentator noted that the device is actually a simple calculator, and is part of a four piece office gift set. In their defense, there is some other Apple hardware present, including a PowerBook, Cinema Display, and an iPod...

Yup, it's the night before Macworld, alright.

Yes... but do you remember Steve constantly referring to a big TV this and big tv that when talking about the iTV... to the point where I was just thinking why keep banging on about your big tv, does this mean it won't work on a smaller tv?? It was just the way he had to correct himself half way through and then errm your big TV...

Yet there is this from Apple Insider...

Quote:
Apple Computer may hold ambitions of taking its living room digital media strategy to the big screen -- literally.

According to a research note released by American Technology analyst Shaw Wu on Monday, the company is working on "large-screen" technologies within its development labs.

"We are not certain on timing but our analysis indicates that AAPL is beyond prototype on large-screen technologies (for a larger monitor or possibly Apple-branded HDTV)," the analyst told his clients.
I am sure Apple is cooking up something in this area otherwise why did he keep repeating himself - checkout the previous Keynote and you'll know what I mean... I think he was dropping a few more clues there...

I shamelessly ripped that from an obscure "MAcz Roomerz" site. Don't shoot the messenger

Home theatre in "piano black" a la Samsung.

BTW, Sony use Samsung LCDs. AFAICT they win out on their DSP boards, at S, W or X spec. Apple could just as well source Samsung LCDs for their TVs too.

From my cursory look at panels side-by-side, Sony images come out tops vs Samsung, JVC and Panasonic. Philips were slipping.

ok lets try and consolidate keynote chat to this thread, all the other ones are confusing me!

Does anyone think that by the end of today, we could realistically see Leapord on our shelves, or is going to be end of March stuff, then?

IMO I don`t think Leopard is even going to ship this spring. i cannot explain why - I just think that it will be delayed.

let`s hope not!

I think we're looking at March/April. Of course, it's always possible that Jobs will surprise us, but I don't think an immediate Leopard release is going to be announced today. I think we'll get a date, but I don't think it'll be today.

here is a strange theory of a friend... any ideas if this may be something:

something about the apple product line up is puzzling, something is missing!

let's connect the dots... here are the facts:

= "itv" is announced in september & introduced at wwdc jan. 10th 2007
= "itv" becomes "apple tv" and is being released/sold in mid/end of february
= "iphone" is announced for sale in june - with new "touch-technology"
= "802.11n" fast wi-fi is announced in all new airport extremes with new form-factor identical to apple-tv
= "802.11n" unlock software update announced - for all existing mac-intel computers
= "Airport Utility" software updated with new interface and more features
= apple settles lawsuit british music label "apple" & signs a deal for "the beatles album" with exclusive rights to music distribution
= "osXLeopard" is expected to be sold by march 24th with tons new "secret" features
= sneak preview of some features include new "ichat"

... look at what "apple tv" has+does: tv-tuner with 40GB hard-drive, SERVER-type intel processor with 256mb VIDEO memory, os-x based software for images, music, video with a remote, comes with WI-FI (a/g+fast n), comes with 10/100 ETHERNETnetwork-connection USB a usb port "for services and diagnostic purposes" (?)... delivers high-def 720p tv quality

then,

...look at the extended features in the new "OS X Leopard" particularly "ichat" -features include new "ichat/video-conference" with "virtual backdrops", "display sharing" and ...

then,

... look at what the "iphone" does besides being a phone: it has fast WI-FI that can connect to your "apple tv", and... it's the perfect new input device with touch-pad-keyboard & number touch-pad.

now...

what is seriously missing in the apple product line up? here the facts:

= all mac's have built in web-cam's, except the new mac pro towers - they rely on "i-sight"
= "isight" web-cam is removed from apple website in december - not sold anymore
= "apple CINEMA displays" in sizes 20", 23", and 30" do not have webcam's built in & have not been updated/renewed since 2004
= "apple CINEMA displays" have maintained highest price-point vs. other manufacturers ($3000 for 30") and still sold well
= "apple CINEMA displays" got a major price cut last summer (-$1000 less for 30" = $1999, making that $3000 price-point available again), and are still selling very very well at almost 2x the price of all other displays! (nice margins in that product line?!)

now...

not a fact yet, but...a simple & very likely conclusion:
= apple may introduce new "apple CINEMA-HD displays" with built in webcams - right?! this sounds logical & is very realistic, no?!

now...

what if apple introduces new "CINEMA HD" high-definition TV displays with built-in webcams, but... also introduces display sizes of 42" and 50" or 60" inch versions ....with built-in webcams ?! yes, that's TV-size displays with integrated webcams.

what would this do for the living room experience?
what would it do to "apple tv" purpose/usefulness/expansion/sales?

42" and 50" or 60" inch CINEMA HD displays would mean that the "apple tv" is not just a multi-function media-box, but a component of something much bigger - the entire experience. (... do you think apple enjoys presenting their "apple tv" box with sony, hitachi, panasonic displays?)

according to apple:

Your computer is the center of your digital life. Your TV is the center of your entertainment life. But what if you want to watch movies, TV shows, movie trailers, podcasts, and photos from your computer on your TV? At $299, Apple TV brings iTunes to the big screen.

who's big screen? what kind of big screen?

now...

imagine... a 42" and 50" or 60" inch CINEMA HD displays - functioning as TV's in the living room with integrated webcam hooked up to "apple tv" networking with your laptops + ipod (+ later iphone), connected to high-speed internet & networking to all with fast 802.11n wi-fi, controlled by simple mini apple remotes...

imagine... if you could sit in the living room, do "i-chat" with video-conferencing with anyone else that has a tv?! maybe using your skype video conferencing to have your whole family chat with a friend via your tv? take pictures of your family/yourself with photobooth during christmas or holidays, manipulate them with filters & have fun & send them, share them...

imagine... you could go through all your music, videos (+porn), on your living room tv - pull them from any other device, then view the desktop of any other device through the new leopard "display sharing" function, control other devices... control your tv through wifi and your computer

imagine... you could call someone on your "iphone" through it's included wifi connection, but since your "iphone" is synced with your TV... you would see your keyboard selections/clicks on the large screen and "click" you have them on your CINEMA display video-conferencing... well maybe this last one will be introduced at WWDC2008 - but otherwise:

all the software is in place!
all the hardware is in place!

what is missing are only the large displays with integrated i-sight.... and... the marketing, the apple buzz, the announcement!

here another rumor:
apple is scheduled (very expensive air-time is already bought) - to do one of their largest advertising campaigns at SUPERBOWL 2007!
... didn't they introduce the very first macintosh AD at the 1984 superbowl?

do you think it's to introduce products they already showcased at macworld or are already announced, like the "iphone"?
or...do you think it's to sell "beatles" music?

where would you sell a living room "viewing" experience?
what products fit into mainstream america's highest televised event?
