My brother just bought his first Mac (MacBook Black) and I will be making the jump to an iMac after they get the new Intel chips (hopefully). Since this is our first experience with OSX I was wondering if there are any must have utilities or programs. From just playing around we've noticed that pretty much everything we need is built into the OS, but there is always stuff out there that you have to have. Like Open Office for Mac or something like that. What do y'all recomend? Thanks.

Adium, Flip4Mac and VLC come to mind as some must-haves. Try doing a search of the forums, there have been several similar threads with heaps of information in them.

And welcome to AppleNova.

The iMac has had an intel core duo chip since january.

Edit: Oh... I misunderstood. I didn't realize that when you said "new intel chips" you were talking about core duo 2.

Yeah, I was refering to either the Morem or Conroe as hopefully one will go in the iMac with the release of the chips.

flip4mac does not support intel imacs yet, unless you use rosetta.

If you open and save a lot of files, Default Folder is a must have. It's a great extention of the open/save dialog boxes and allows you to access open folders in the finder with a click of the mouse. You can set up favorites and whatnot and it has all the features of Super Get Info built in.

jdcfsu, welcome to the wonderful world of macs! you'll find the people on this board very, very helpful and friendly.

I made the switch about 5 months ago, and it's been the best 5 months of my computing life!
