Do you guys remember the surge in interest in action figures back in the 1990s? Back when Star Wars figures started being manufactured again and when McFarlane's Spawn line started a mini-revolution? I was intrigued at the time and started playing around with making my own storyline and action figures and got as far as sculpting a goofy little spaceman in armor model and casting duplicates with the idea of assembling it and selling copies.

That project fell by the wayside as other things cropped up, but tonight I sat down and shot some photos of the thing and have uploaded them to my Flickr account at this link:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/drewpro...7623375883510/

Let me know what you think!
(I have other unfinished projects that I should photo and upload)

I remember very well. I bought a few.

I loved this series (verses the original 70's/80's figures). These were more stylized/heroic (exaggerated muscles and "ready for action" stance), and the detail and accuracy in the costumes was so much better.

I should have thought to pose my action figure on a hockey table!

(note that I'm addding a few photos to make the thread more interesting)

I bought them, 1-2 at a time, back when I was living in California in the mid-late 90's. They all came from Target (because I was there at least once a week).

I wound up giving them all to my friend in Texas, who has a son who is into this stuff as much as his Dad and I were "back in the day". That pic was taken by him and sent back to me.

I'd had them all individually wrapped in paper towels and inside two shoeboxes for several years. I was going to get them out, pose them and put them on some sort of display here at home. But I just thought it would be cooler if they were used and played with. They're toys, after all (I don't believe in treating toys - or guitars - like untouchable museum pieces...I hate that mentality). So off they went to Texas a year or two ago, where they would be appreciated and played with. New adventures for a new generation.

And, yes...I miss them. That pic is the only memory/connection I have.

I don't know, but it's better than him looking like Owen Wilson (as was the case with the original '78 figure).

"Aww, man. Come on, Ben. Lemme go with you...I, I can shut down a tractor beam too. How hard can it be? Hey, listen...we'll do that, stop and have a few drinks and...man, it'll be fun!"

Spoiler (click to toggle):
Imagine the above in Wilson's surfer/slacker drawl...I know you can.

You can market him under the name Dick Head, drew!

He can double as a sex toy for those fetishists who like their dildos to have limbs.

Yeah I had kinda also noticed that uhm... shape. But I didn't want to be the first to point it out, fearing to be called out as a d***head.

I couldn't believe my luck when I saw the thread had got so far without someone commenting on it.

You guys are off your game!

I'd have said something funnier but I just had to be the first.

The question is, should the thread have a NSFW warning attached to it?

I share a similar mentality, now at least. When I was a kid I didn't touch mine, they're all still in the original bulky plastic.

YOU BASTARDS!!!!

Another friend of mine pointed that out today

That's what you get for running out of red friendly plastic and not going back to sculpt the paneled diving bell helmet you originally intended to do. I may just go back and finish this thing to SPITE YOU ALL >

Awwww. I thought you should consider a (human) female counterpart. She could give the Alien a run for its money.

I was going to ask if he comes in an uncircumcized version.

But then I realized this was going to be one of those threads where everything I say just ends up sounding dirty........

why hasn't adult swim come up with the idea of an animate series of action figures that look close to, but are not human genitalia.

Damned if I know! Seems to me the world's just crying out for some walking/talking genitalia.

Exactly my first thought when I read billybob's post.

I'd be whacking a copyright notice on Dick Head right now if I were you.

Now I'm really, honestly thinking about finishing the helmet for this damned thing so I can ditch the (deserved) Dick Head thing... and I'm thinking about paint schemes... Hmmm....

Take a look at this action figure pack "Big Sister and Little Sister" from the videogame Bio Shock 2 - lots of texture, great articulation. (like the reviewer, I've never played the game and have no idea what this is all about, and like the reviewer I'd be tempted to buy the thing just to play with it)

Well drew, you've all but lost the race to come up with a female version of Dick Head. If only you spent more time thinking about naughty bits instead of diving bells you could have pwned the toy industry, the collectibles industry, the porn industry and untold others.

You've only got yourself to blame.

The world could have been your oyster.

Ahem.
