Went to the Comp USA in Salem NH today (right after the friggin blizzard from hell) and they have a sign out front that says "The Mac Mini is HERE!"

So I go in the store the the mac section and I'm looking for the mythical Mac Mini and I don't see any, not even a display model... nothing, I know they are on back order for the next 3 months or so.

I grab the clerk and I ask him about them, he said "The Mac Mini's aren't here yet" so I point out the fact that there is a large sign out by the road advertizing the mac mini and that they should probably take it down till they get here.

He argues with me, saying that the sign says the iPod Mini is here, not the Imac Mini, but refuses to go outside so I can prove him wrong.

So I leave the store, grab the sign (it was one of those sandwich board things) and drag it into the store and set it down right infront of him and ask him to read the sign to me.

he then say's "Sir, you going to have to leave the store" and I repeat, "Read me the sign buddy and I'll leave"

So he calls security on me! and they escort me out, I had a few "kind" words for the employee and the manager on duty on my way out.

make me wish you could get mac's at best buy....

Great story. They probably threw you out for interfering with their sign. That does not change the fact that they are ungracious, lying bastards.

LOL,

But do understand, while the sales rep. was being a dick, it may have not been his choice to put up the advert in the first place...

I often find myself taking the heat for my co-workers choices... but that's expected being the guy who deals with people so the techs don't have to.

You should have seen the pure crap I had to deal with when my company invoked an admin fee for all warranty repairs... people did not want to pay to have their computer repaired under warranty. Did management have to deal with irate people? No. But I shure as hell did.

Meh, it was fun... I tend to like pissing people off... and my job provides me with plenty of ways to do so.

no sig, how's that for being a rebel!

Maybe if you had been a reasonable customer you might have gotten better service from the clerk.

Devilotx,
Could you please let me know if security was really called? My understanding is that this is a freestanding store, not a Mall, and would only be patrolled by Salem PD. Also, if you have the name of the clerk or store manager, it would be appreciated.
We are considering an article on customer service and would like to include the incident, if it can be verified. We are in the process of contacting both the store and Comp corporate for their comment(s).
And just to let you know, the corporate office stated that the mini was not scheduled to ship until this Friday. Perhaps you could also let us know if the sign goes back up?
Thanks,

It was a free standing store, they have just been more employee's I interperated it as Security.

The person was a larger Black man, probably about 25-28.

I never go to that store so I don't know any other information, I frequent the Comp USA store in Danvers MA, sorry.

you mean like the time I went to a compusa spending over 7k? waited and waited, asked customer service for help, never got it, so finally after almost an hour, I went and got a mover thingy they had, packed on flowerpower imac, g4 cube, and 17" studio display only to have a person finally come over to say "sir, you cant take those off the floors, you have to speak to a salesperson and they will get them out back", my reply was "I have been waiting over an hour, there are no other customers here, I went to customer service twice, so where is this magical salesperson?"
I then took the stuff over to a register, the manger ran out apoligizing, and the sales girl was going to ring it up and the manager said to not use the salespersons code that covers that floor but to use a generic code(or something).. they kissed my ass all the way out of the store....

That's a classic. My favorite line:

Hire untrained school kids to man your staff, because I like being told that the swap file on my computer is "pretend memory." Being talked down to by crater-faced sales staff is a humbling experience, and the phrase "pretend memory" is awesome. It makes me want to pay you pretend money for the pretend advice I received from your staff with pretend technical knowledge.

As much as I enjoy a good Comp USA beatdown, I can't get past the fact that you were a total asshole.

The sales guy could easily have not known the exact phrase on the sign outside. So of course when you mention it he's going to say "oh, no, we have the iPod Mini in stock".

And you really expected him to walk outside with you to check out signs? Whatever, man.

Then you set up a fucking sandwich board sign in the store, talk down to him like a 4-year old, asking him to read the sign to you. It shocks you that he doesn't immediately obey you?

I would have said the same thing to you with a few changes.

"Sir, you going to have to leave the store" would be "You ignorant prick, get the fuck out of my face. There's the door."

Seriously, am I the only one here that thinks this is not a normal way to conduct yourself? Are you this much of a jerk all the time? If you are, get used to this kind of thing, man. It certainly won't be the first time you are asked to leave a store.

In the many years that I lived in New England I saw hundreds of similar confrontations. This must be some kind of Northern thing. I never could understand it.
If one talked to someone like that down here in the South you would be escorted to the parking lot for an ass wooping.

Everyone's a jerk anymore. It's the new thing. It's rare that I'm out in public and don't encounter it (as some of my more rant-tinged threads over the years have shown).

Customers are usually jerks, but so are the employees at places. No one wants to help, no one wants to go the extra mile (hell, the extra mile? No one wants to go the extra inch!), you got surly, marblemouthed jackwads with the social skills of a garden hose manning most counters and check-out lanes. In fact, the next 17-year-old who rolls their eyes at me - male or female - for merely stepping forward to place my order is going to get a smack, damn the consequences.

On the flipside, you have shitheaded, inconsiderate, know-nothing customers. Full of hot-air, with a cell phone permanently attached to their head to show you how important they are. They want WHAT they want, WHEN they want it...and NOW. No room for error or wiggle...they're much too important. They think it's cool to yell and make scenes in public, and generally show their ass. Earns them frequent flyer points, I suppose.

Just a dangerous mix: morons, both, just on different sides of the counter. Add them together, and it's a wonder anything ever gets accomplished. Or that there aren't more mass shootings and road-rage bludgeonings.

Honest to goodness, I've just about had it with everyone.

Manners and civility are not taught or valued anymore. End of story.

It's open season and "be the asshole you've always wanted to be!" at play out there.

I agree with Murbot. Setting up the sign inside and then asking the guy to read may have been a bit much. I am sure at this point it was more of a taunt rather than a request for him to read the advert. "Nanny nanny boo boo" was pobably at the end of your statemnt as well.

I am sure the salesperson was being a dick but how about just turning the other cheek. Walk away, find the manager and tell him that one of his salesmen has just called you a liar. Ask for the store id number and the feedback telephone number, then walk out.

The closest compusa to me is in Tallahassee, it is the closest palce to get Apple anything. Most of the time when I go in I am there for about five minutes and one of the salespeople will politely ask if I need any help, Not too in your face or anything like that. I have only had one altercation that anoyed me, I was buying a wireless router and the girl at the register tried to sell me the electric surge warranty. I told her that I didn't really need it. That should be enough to get her to just ring it up and give me the total right? No, she walks to another checkout, gets a pamphlet and starts telling me what I get if I purchase it. I told her again(politley, I have a three strikes rule) that I did not need it. She said "fine, but if it stops working and I'm at the returns counter I will remember." I thought to myself that she had gone a little bit too far. Strike three clicked in my head and it was over for her. I said as loud as I could, "No, really I don't need the warranty on it. I HAVE A SURGE PROTECTOR ON THE OUTSIDE OF MY HOUSE INSTALLED BY THE POWER COMPANY, IF IT FAILS THEY WILL REPLACE IT FOR ME. I WAS JUT TRING TO CUT THIS AS SHORT AS POSSIBLE BUT YOU HAVE TUNED THIS INTO A 30 MINUTE AFFAIR. PLEASE WILL YOU JUST RING IT UP AND LET ME LEAVE, MY INTERNET IS DOWN AND I AM TRYING TO GET HOME SO I CAN GET UPDATES FROM MY PORN SITES BEFORE MY WIFE GETS HOME." I was out of there in 30 seconds.

I concur that I indeed, was an asshole about it, but I'm also very much against being made to feel like an assclown, when I attempt to assist the place by pointing out some erronious (sp?) advertizing and I get shit for it... well then the asshole in me comes out to play.

And yes... it was worth it,

Damn... I am getting old.

All 50 people employed by that store won't know what every sign says. A civil course of action would be to talk to the manager about removing the sign.

EDIT: ... but thanks for the a good story!
