I looked up some of the shortcut keys on my powerbook the other day and cant figure out what some of the keys are. Example; change to white on black, zoom in or out, capture screen to file. Can yo guys give me some help please?
Thanks in advance

Clover leaf = cmd
Up arrow = shift
^ = ctrl
backwards Z looking thing = option/alt

Reverse video: Cmd-opt-ctrl-8
Screen grab: Shift-Cmd-3 (Shift-Cmd-4 give you a selectable grab tool)

This subject has wlready been discussed twice very recently:

What is this menu item shortcut?
Wrong icons on files, uninstalling apps, menu shortcuts, etc.

Please search or browse the Genius Bar before starting new threads with general usage question like this. Chances are good, like this, that your question has already been answered.

So, quick summary:
  • The cloverleaf (campground) symbol is the shortcut for the command key.
  • The hollow up arrow is the shortcut for the shift key.
  • The carat is the shortcut for the control key.
  • The "split path" is the shortcut for the option key.
The UP arrow is used for shift because shift usually makes something UPPER case. The "split path" as I called it is used for the alt/option key because it looks like a symbol you'd see for taking an alternatate/optional route on a trail. The carat has always been the control symbol in Unix and Linux command lines over the years. I find that understanding the meaning behind the symbols like this has helped to keep me from mixing up the control and option symbols (which I used to confuse regularly).

Fun fact! If you do Shift-Cmd-4, then hit the space bar, you can take a screen grab of a specific window. Pretty cool!

BleueRabbit - Thanks for the spacebar trick with Shift-Cmd-4 option.

Adding Ctrl to any of the Cmd-Shift-3 or 4 variants saves to clipboard rather than a file. FYI.
