Here's a great article from the Design Museum on Jonathan Ive. For those who don't know him, he's the guy who makes Apple products look like Apple. Also responsible for the design of the Harman Kardon sub-woofer. The nano is his latest creation. Wow.

Interesting background - born in London, studied at Newcastle Polytechnic in rainy north east England and based in Cupertino since the early nineties.

A quite exceptional and a very humble chap.

It is a good read ... I got the link from Daring Fireball the other day. (I'm really enjoying reading what John has to say, as well as checking out some of the links he posts - it's a great site.)

When I finally saw a picture of him, he didn't look anything like I'd imagined. Kind of had that Nick Hornby soccer hooligan look.

Where have you guys been? This is the first time you've seen Ive?

He appears in all those promo videos Apple rolls out at MWSF keynotes to talk about their latest big release (usually with some celebrities, Schiller and a few others). Has for years now (and those videos are always posted on Apple's site, afterwards).

Odd.

What were you EXPECTING him to look like...a walking technical pen and compass? Or a member of Duran Duran?

I edited your text in the quote, to how my mind perceived it the first time I read your post.

The mind does strange things sometimes.

Strange - it's hard to avoid Phil Schiller - the nature of the man no doubt - but I think I've only ever seen 2 interviews with Ive.

Thank goodness you didn't spell his name "Ives"! One of my pet peeves.

I was so impressed with the design of the first white iBook (current form factor, still the best-looking laptop on the market) that I made it my duty to find out who designed it (not long after that, I bought my first Apple). I remember being surprised how much Jonathan Ive looked like I expected. Young, very simple dress sense, monochromatic, slightly plump muscular body from leading a sedentary life and doing an hour or two in the gym to compensate. He looks like the products he designs!

Industrial design is a fascinating field of endeavour, partly because it is so international. Jonathan Ive is British but works for an American company, and looks and talks like an American (except for the accent of course). His designs are beguilingly simple, beautiful on a simple instinctive level. Chris Bangle, the designer who radically changed the direction of BMW over the last couple of years, is American but lives in Europe and acts and talks like a European. His designs are extremely conceptual ("flame" design, anyone? Comparing the design of the BMW Z4 to Adam and Eve discovering clothes?). Patrick le Quément's provocative Renault Mégane is industrial design at its best: the new form language of playful/retro/strange multi-faceted surfaces somehow adds up to desire in a way that perhaps BMW's new ultra-intellectual designs do not (although personally I am a huge fan of BMW's new look). And Frank Nuovo, the Italian American vice president of design at Nokia, looks and talks like an American but designs like an old-school Italian, with extravagant materials, sensuous lines, and no fear of taking risks.

One thing that worries me is that if one looks at design and fashion today, it is difficult to see where Apple's design ethos can go from here. Design is becoming more conceptual, more self-conscious, more retro (in the true sense) and generally less minimalist.

Can Apple continue to lead in such an environment? It will be fascinating to find out!
