I'm glad somebody bumped this thread, because I was at a restaurant the other day, and they were playing the world's worst cover of The Cure's "Friday I'm In Love," and I just need to share my horror with all of you. Seriously, it was the second-worst song with "Friday" in the title I've ever heard. I guess they get props for actually playing it on Friday, though. That song is really depressing if you're listening to it on, like, a Monday.

So, what's the consensus on the new Strokes album? Yay? Nay? Bley?

I'd tell you it's called "Civilization," and that it's pretty metal, and that it might get loud. But, really, it hit iTunes early and it's on YouTube now. What else do you need to know?

Justice is the most-oft-dubbed candidate for The New Daft Punk* due to that other French electronica duo's near-total absence from music since 2005. Justice has a ballsier, metal-influenced sound, however. Justice's 2007 debut, †, was their Homework (i.e., really fucking good!), and they scored international hits with "D.A.N.C.E." and "DVNO." Fresh off a 2009 Grammy win for their remix of MGMT's "Electric Feel," there's a huge amount of hype for their upcoming second album ("the Discovery for a new decade!"). "Civilization" is the first single from that album.

*) I think we're pretty much past this point, now. At this rate we're about one hit single away from every other electronica musician claiming to be The New Justice.

I don't know. I'm a Justice fan and all but this one seems pretty derivative. It's filled with some pretty obvious ripoffs, Robot Rock and Wars Pigs to be precise, then goes into a few rounds of chorus, then some kind of ELO homage, then back to chorus. Not that it isn't catchy and the idea of blending all of the aforementioned music together isn't made of win, I guess I just expected something a bit more original.

I'm seeing some hype backlash on the Internets, but that's to be expected with the first listen of any hyped/"event" album. (I'm seeing a lot of people loving it, though, too.) It'll be a while before I can say anything remotely objective about it...I'll have to see if it's still in my regular rotation weeks from now. But I have been listening to it all day.

It's not my favorite Justice song, and I do hear where you're coming from with the "Robot Rock" comparo, but it's pretty catchy, and listenable enough. It's an interesting choice for lead single...it's a lot less radio-friendly than "D.A.N.C.E." or "DVNO."

After years of not having it - despite it having been a hugely important piece of music to me when I was in my 20s - I recently (re)bought Kate Bush's Hounds of Love. As good now as it was then. Genius.

Actually, Kate Bush has regained full control of her music from that era. EMI will be re-releasing 4 albums (hopefully with up-to-date mixing). Also, a new album is planned. I liked her last one and am looking forward to the next.

That's shocking to me considering my musical tastes, but I blame my parents - I didn't really start listening to music until I was 16 (when I got my car and had a place to listen to music unbothered) in 1992. Damn, I'm old...

More on the musical front from the Eurovision song contest a few weeks back. Usually atrocious and mostly only watched for mockery, but turned out there were two gems...

This Italian dude Raphael Gualazzi is following the Swinging Jazz / Jamie Callum / Michael Buble thing, and totally floated my boat... best of show for me. Madness of Love

Raphael Gualazzi was born in Urbino on 11th November, 1981. He studied piano at the Rossini Conservatory in Pesaro, and then extended his musical research to include Jazz, Blues and Fusion.

Raphael caught the attention of the general public with his cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Don't Stop", which was used in a TV advert.

In the summer of 2010, Raphael performed at the Heineken Jammin Festival, the prestigious Pistoia Blues Festival and the Giffoni Film Festival, and went on to launch his first digital EP at the Blue Note club in Milan, which took him to the top of the iTunes charts.

Tasty writing, arranging and performing. Definitely one to watch/listen to.

But the Moldovans went for the "Most Hallucinogenic Eurovision Entry" with bizarre gnome hats, unicycles, and zany beats... Zdob si Zdub (cool Tiltshift photography openings not part of their video but add to WTF awesomeness)

Hiatt's performance (and the video work in capturing it) is simply in-fucking-credible.

This season's Treme has been great, story-wise, and music-wise. The Mardi Gras episode was great, showing the NOLA mardi gras juxtaposed with the Cajun mardi gras.
It's not up with The Wire yet but it's moving that way.

I'm listening to the 50 song Django collection Amazon had for 3.99 today.

Here I am watching/listening to the latest iTunes Treme music performance, again. And it's even better than last week's one!

I bet everyone can guess who this week's featured artists are.....

Seriously, though - another great video. I'd pay big money to see a whole concert shot by this production crew and their gear. Needs more bass on the EQ, though, so adjust accordingly when listening.

Worth at least the free preview, and also well worth the buck and a half to download. A great portrayal of a Mardi Gras show at Tipitina's, performing a song inspired by the patron saint of NOLA music in the venue dedicated to his memory.

Not to beg or anything, but anyone downloading it is doing a big favor for me, some friends of mine, and everyone that wants to see Treme get their 3rd season renewal.

We saw The Decemberists in June. It was a really good show. I think I enjoyed their "Hazards of Love" show more just because it was a very thematic show, but they are fun to watch live. I can't speak for the Head and the Heart (nor do I know a thing about Mumford and Sons).
