This is probably a ridiculously newbie question for someone who has never owned or used a non-Apple computer (dating to the early 1980s), but anyway, I've never owned a digital camera and, thus, I've never been a big iPhoto user. (I usually just use Preview to view pictures.) I do, however, have a lot of random photos on my PowerBook -- mostly in .jpg form -- that I'd like to be able to view on my iPhone. (Not porn; get your minds out of the gutter.)

I assume the "Photos" option on the iPhone (as seen in today's ads) is powered by iPhoto (?) much like music is powered by iTunes. I've always thought of iPhoto as an app for use with digital cameras, and not as a repository for saved photos off the 'net, etc., since Preview seems like a faster/lighter viewing option. Should I be importing all saved photos into iPhoto as standard practice instead of just saving to folders and opening them with Preview? Is that how most people use iPhoto, or am I right that it's mostly for user-taken digital photos? Thanks.

Well, it's kind of for whatever you want it to be. I know folks who use it religiously to store keyword-tagged images from anywhere, and those who won't even use it with their digital cameras.

I use it for a mix. All digital photos go in there, and often a good batch of images I want to sort with tags. Easier than using Spotlight comments.

For light to medium weight photo library management, iPhoto is excellent. People with absolutely massive libraries and various project to manage frequently turn to other tools.

On a newer Mac, casual photographers should have no problem with iPhoto. Interaction is instantaneous even with a 10000 photo library. Thumbnails from within iPhoto can be treated almost exactly like files in the finder. Want to copy a photo somewhere, just drag it from iPhoto to wherever you want it. There is also external editor support for anything more than trivial photo retouching.
