hey safari refuses to let me download RAR files!

Well if i click a RAR download link i just displays the scripting in a new window - i thought maybe that the site wasnt made for mac? - but it happens alot so i clicked back and insted of clicking on the link i right clicked > save target life . so then it comes up with the downloads window and is downloading fine untill after a few KB into the download it puts a .txt extension on it so when i go and remove the .txt apendage and its a rar file again, i extract it with stuffit expander and it says:

an error has occured in expanding the file xyz.rar (format error)
error#17540

i have some verry important downloads i need to expand

It sounds like a problem with the server. It's not that the site "wasn't made for a Mac" but rather that it wasn't made for RAR files. I'd put money on the server's MIME types either being missing or set incorrectly for RAR files. In short, there's not much you can do about that.

The reason Safari appends a .txt extension is that the server is describing the file as a plain text document. Yes, what Safari is doing is bad, but it should only affect the filename, not the contents of the file itself. Removing the extension should make it appear as a RAR file, as you mentioned, but will not "corrupt" the file at all. I suspect either the original file or Stuffit Expander (very possible, actually) is FUBARed.

ok but it seems to do it to every rar file no matter what the site?

so maybe theres an issue with stuffit expander, which is corrupting the file?

oh and the contents of the rar file im trying to download are possibly in a windows format - but its a maya MEL universal binary i think?
