I'm talking about Paris, France, not Paris Hilton...
Anyway, the wife and I are heading to France for a while. For the most part our accomodations are covered one way or another. But the only one where we need to find some is in Paris. I'm leafing through the Lonely Planet Guide and see that Paris is broken up into a number of different areas/districts. I'm just wondering if any ANians have any suggestions or thoughts on what area(s) of Paris is/are worth focusing on. The transport system is pretty extensive, by the looks of it, so we should be able to get around OK, but would prefer to stay in a safe area. Not looking for anything fancy, just a clean, well-lit, safe area with a few hotel/hostels around. Thanks in advance for any suggestions. Specialists are people who know more and more about less and less until they know everything about nothing. Generalists are people who know less and less about more and more until they know nothing about everything. I'm somewhere in the middle. |

Paris is small. You can literally walk across it in a few hours. Stay where you can afford.

yeah... paris is a walkable city but you might need to pick up a Plan de Arrondisemonts (sp) from the FNAC
a friend and i walked across the city when we missed the last subway train home.... we walked for 3 hours and went through 5 bottles of wine along the way,.... fun time |

Paris has a very good public transportation system. If money is a consideration you could opt for a place along a metro/RER line a little outside the old city.

If you feel like a bit of a splurge, say, for one night, I know a fantastic place that's not too expensive. I stayed in a hotel near the Eiffel tower when I stayed (right by the Japanese embassy, I think) and it was ok. Paris seems to have a big problem with illegal (I assume, watching their behavior around Police..) immigrants who sell cheap crap and are very pushy. It's quite funny when a Police car comes by though - they scatter like nothing I've ever seen before.
People will tell you that Parisiens are rude. That's not strictly true...its more that big city people are just like that... Anyway, the nice place is the Champs Elysee Plaza Hotel - really beautiful, but small. And a great location. |

There is a lovely district called the Butte-aux-Cailles. It has very nice bars and restaurants and also some small hotels. If you happen to be there, visit the "Chez Gladines". It's a Basque restaurant. Be sure to try the sangria while waiting for a table!

The whole city is full of hotels. If you stay anywhere in central Paris, you'll be within walking distance to a monument.
You'll find a Hotel Ibis anywhere. They're cheap, secure, and clean. You had me at asl ....... |

Can't find the name of the hotel I stayed at two years ago, but it is right by the Opera house. About three or four blocks from the Louvre. Great area, bars restaurants, English speaking friendly. I walked one day from the hotel, down the Champs Elysee to the Arc, then over to the Eiffel Tower down the river and over to Roland Garros. The people along the way were great. Even the non-English speak types were great!
Have fun. Spend some time at the Musee d'Orsay. That place is great! Different Strokes, for Different Folks. And So On and So On, and Skoobie Doobie Doobie. |
