How do you say OS X?
Do you say "Oh Es Ten" or "Oh Es Ex"? Vote in the poll. Also feel free to say what your answer is in a post and whether or not you started using a Mac in the Pre-OS X years I know "Oh Es Ten" is supposed to be correct, but I say "Oh Es Ex" and I switched to an Apple after OS X was introduced. My dad started with OS 9 and also says "Oh Es Ex" |

The correct pronunciation is "ten" and has been since it was introduced. The 'X' character is the roman numeral for ten.
Whenever I hear people say "ex" I assume they are dimwits. Do people spell out roman numerals in other instances? What about movie titles, for example? If I heard someone say something about "Star Wars episode vee eye" I'd feel obligated to smack 'em. Hard. The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. I used to say "oh es ex", but then switched to "oh es ten" after watching a few Steve Jobs keynotes.

Oh Es Ten is the correct way to say it. Just everyone take note. I'm actually really surprised that so many people call it "Ecks."

I can't believe more than half of the people call it 'EX', I've always though it was supposed to be 'TEN', since the one before it was 9...
When I hear people call it 'EX' I think they're stupid n00bs, but since I'm a switcher, maybe I'm wrong? But I'm anal about that kinda stuff, I hate when people write Itunes, Imac or Ipod. It just bugs me. I coulda swore Jobs has always called it 'TEN' in the keynotes... I really don't care either way, 'TEN' sounds so much better than 'EX', I'm sticking with 'TEN'. iMac G3 iMac G5 MacBook |

I say Ten. Makes sense coming after OS9
The first Mac OS I used was 7.6 in school, and my first Mac (PM6500) came with OS8 which was upgraded through 8.5, 8.6, 9 and 9.1. I didnt really use OSX until 10.4, though I had a little experience with 10.1 on iMacs in college. |

I'm with chucker on this one..
So THRRRRRRR to Brad! I am in the group of people that know it is pronounced 'Ten', but prefer to say 'Oh' 'ess' 'eks'. I am not a 'dimwit' so when speaking to people who I think would expect to hear me say 'exx' I do.. But at home, and in my head it has always been and will be 'eks'. I prefer "Oh Es Ex" myself, but as I've mentioned here before, since the X can be construed rightfully as a Roman numeral 10, it serves a double function--in essence, it's a pun or non-sexual double-entendre of sorts.
Of course, we'll find out for sure once "System 11" comes out. Note too that at Apple's site, there are references to, and I quote, "Mac OS X v10.4 Tiger" and "Mac OS X version 10.4 'Tiger'." (The latter link is a PDF file; the reference comes specifically from page 3 of the Tiger product guide.) |

According to Apple it's "OS Ten." Also, open TextEdit, type "OS X" and select Edit->Speech->Start Speaking.
I'm pretty sure the pun was intended to be a visual one. |

Oh es ex sounds a lot cooler than oh es ten. I do hate it when people say that they have "oh es ex ten". Double whammy!

I think Oh es ten sounds better. Oh es ex, especially when said quickly sounds like 'Oh! Sex!'. While OS X is good, it's hardly that good! |

Is mispronunciation any more excusable than misspelling? Should we just give up altogether on properly identifying products by their names?

Except that it can be argued that it's not a mispronunication but rather a case of different way of looking at it; X is roman numberal for ten, and since they do use the X on packaging, it's ambigious.
Saying "So X", on the other hand... *points to Ol'Bill's grave* |

FWIW, this is how I say OS X.
which flows more smoothly and is easier to read than if I said OS Ten. But I guess I need His Steveness's approval, do I? |
