I have been an avid Photoshop user on Windows before but not I have finally seen the truth and switched to Macs. I have thousands of pictures (mostly JPG) that I would like to archive using one program. iPhoto 6 or Aperture? I've read some very bad reviews of Aperture's export quality and don't want that to be an issue. Was that fixed in the 1.0.1 update?
I will do most of my photo retouching/editing in Photoshop anyway so I'm more just looking for a good presentation/organizational program. Something similar to the iTunes Library. What do people think is the better "long-term" archival program.... iPhoto or Aperture? -Michael |

I think iPhoto sucks because it copies your existing images to its folders. I like to maintain my own directory structure and organize my photos that way but iPhoto won't let me. Never used Aperture. See if you can get your hands on the software that comes with Canon digital cameras. It's called ZoomBrowser and its pretty simple and has most basic features.

I also organize my pictures in a normal folder structure instead of letting iPhoto clusterfuck organize everything to death. I use ImageBrowser 2.2 to view them. It's a very simple program but it's great - you can have it display images in either "fit window" or 100% mode, you can browse the folder structure using just the arrow keys, and it has a simple but powerful renaming tool.

I'm a photographer, and I just leave them all in folders.
Since you are a photoshp geek like me, you use Bridge to browse the images. Bridge is amazing and connects directly to the Adobe RAW editor. PM me if you have further questions. |

I use iPhoto. I haven't had to dig into image folders ever since.

I burn my photos to CD and keep them in a fireproof filing cabinet.

Don't expect that CD to last forever, PKI. The dye used in CD-Rs slowly degrades over years. The cheaper CD-Rs will start to lose data after just a few years, but the better quality dyes are purported to last up to 100 years. You should still create fresh backups periodically.

that sound like a lot of work, I think it's sufficient to have a set of pics on your hdd, and then get another hdd for storage. |

Of course, if they're important, you'll be backing up that hard drive to some other medium anyway, right?

I only have a 60GB hard drive, I don't have room to store them for very long
Probably some time this year I'll buy a large external hard drive or two for photo archiving. |
