Dual processor, dual core, holy hell.

Supports up to 1 TB of storage, 16 GB of RAM, has PCI-X.

Man, this thing is going to be a beast. Intel transition be damned, this is one of the sweetest macs ever made. Can't wait to see the full specs on the Apple site.

Anyone know prices yet? Or must I increase the Apple Store's server load yet further by hitting refresh 9 times a second?

Quad G5 w/ Nvidia QuadroFX 4500 PCI-E For the 3D Pro in you. Yeah! $4,949.00 A lot of cash, but the card is usually $2,500.00 alone. That's actually a smoking deal.

What's the difference between ECC and non-ECC RAM?

So the two lower model PMacs (one dual core) are a bit hobbled as they share the bus whereas before they didn't have to (yes this is less efficient). Not that great an upgrade. The top model (quad) might be ok though over a dual 2.7.

Ah. Store is back up.

£1800 for the top-of-the range model. +£167 for RAM.

Ordered.

Result.

Now for the usage of my student developer discount. $2,639 for the quad and $3,500 in the bank account for this. I would so be buying now but my check card has a $2,500/day cap on it so I need to take a trip to the bank this afternoon to get it bumped up a bit. The only draw back is the lack of a mid-range graphics card option but the 6600 should blow my 5200 out of the water. <head exploding with excitement smilie>.

Those prices were educational, btw.

Interesting factoid: The Apple UK store just went back down for five minutes, and now you can also (but not on the main PowerMac Page) buy the old 2.7 Dual Processor for "if you need PCI-X".

It says 1GHz frontside bus per processor.
But that does not mean per core?

[edit: guess not. wonder if it matters?]

WTF!!! if you max the RAM BTO from Apple, add USD $11900 to your Quad.

Damn! If there's a reason to buy from Crucial or NewEgg

save enough to buy another G5

I just bought one but cannot see justifying $1650 for the QuadroFx card. I am using for home stuff (movie making, editing DVDs, etc.) Think the money would be better spent on additional memory (which I did not buy from Apple and will get from a third-party eventually.)

Don't you agree?

Hey, hold on a minute.

The 2.0 and 2.3 PMs appear to be single processor (but dual core).
thats kind of a step backwards isn't it?

My excitement with the PM bump has gone down quite a bit.

No, but they should have dropped in price. Two individual CPU's can't talk to each other as fast as the two cores of the new CPU.

Well, that single, Dual-Core Processor is faster than the two previous separate processors. So....no, not a step back.

Hey, you notice that the 30" Cinema HD does not say it will suport this geForce 6600 card. . .only Radeon 9650 and x850 XT or GeForce 6800 DDL.

Is that an oversight by Apple not updating their website in that area or do I have a problem?? The Quad area say this card will support dual 30".

NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE and GeForce 6600
Standard Power Mac G5 configurations come with the NVIDIA GeForce 6600 LE with 128MB of GDDR SDRAM or the NVIDIA GeForce 6600 with 256MB of GDDR SDRAM. These cards provide excellent all-around performance for creative and productivity users. Each card offers both a single-link DVI port and a dual-link DVI port and can simultaneously support one 23-inch and one 30-inch Apple Cinema HD Display.

But not 2 30" at the same time. . .ok, I think I get it.

If you go to the tech notes they just posted they are listing 4 video cards:

6600 LE
6600
7800 GT
Quadro Fx 4500

But the third one (7800 GT) does not seem to be an option when you buy. Any one know why?

Maxed out - 16 GB RAM, 1TB HD, Quadra card etc, but not including monitors or extra software - it'll set you back a wallet-busting $18,471.

I have pretty much okayed a G5 iMac with my S.O..... I might try to have a laugh persuading her that we need one of these instead.

To my knowledge, workstation class cards don't do opengl games all that well - a quadrofx card would be great for somebody doing hi-poly modeling, but for general use it might be worse than one of the consumer cards, like the 7800gt.

ECC = Error Correction and Control
IIRC, ECC RAM is a bit slower, but it both corrects and controls errors.
