Im definitely with you on that. It works with the iPhone because its only 8gb maximum and you shouldnt really have all that much music to scroll through. Take a step back and imagine that scrolling interface in a full 80gb iPod... scrolling to an artist beginning with Z could take ages if you have hundreds of artists (like i do in my own iPod).

The only solution i can see is to stick with the scroll wheel, but make it a virtual scroll wheel. Just like some of the rumours months ago have alluded to. Using your finger to scroll up and down is finite, limited to the size of the touch-screen. Using your finger in a circle is infinte. Make sense to me.

Also don't forget that with the iPhone's interface now made public, it could effect sales of existing iPods because consumers feel they are getting old technology. Thats another reason why Apple could update the iPod.

In my opinion Mesiahtosh is correct, Phones and Media Players are different markets at the moment. This could change soon, but i know very few people who use the music functionality of their phones. Most of them have iPods for music and phones to call people.

If you look closely at the still of the song list interface, you'll see on the right side of the screen an A-Z (and 0-9?) index. Poking at a letter will force a jump that part of the alphabet.
