I think I complained too much in the other thread.

Absolute number one: waking up early to go to school, putting your feet on the floor, and realizing it's the first day of summer vacation.

A close second:

The little Adiumy icons.

Finishing a workout.

The new car smell. Interestingly enough, my new Powerbook has the same smell.

Good music.

Finding your favorite video game that you haven't played in ten years.

Edit: the Simpsons.

I posted in "the other thread" that non-Krispy Kreme donuts bother me.

Well, conversely, Krispy Kremes are Little Things That Rule. Better than sex, heroin, crack, whatever. They're made better by the fact that I hardly ever eat them (I couldn't possibly eat them all the time, I'd be a freakin' blimp).

Customer service people who listen and make things happen.

DiGiorno prepackaged pastas & sauces.

My car (hey, it's little!).

Discovering some new-to-me thing that OSX can already do.

Workers at the neighborhood stores.

Whatever that drink was that the bartender in NYC made for me when I requested "something that you'd like to make".

Finding even more obscure references in old episodes of the Simpsons.

Having a big picture window.

Wow, I have so much more to contribute to this thread than the other one...

First that comes to mind is:

Waking up at 4 in the morning feeling well-rested, and getting lots of stuff done before sunrise.

Surfing wirelessly in bed.

My 2 babies, Bob and Charley (look at my profile pic).

Making something do more than everybody thinks is possible (iBook spanning hack).

Finding extra change in vending machine coin return slots.

Sleeping under a half-dozen blankets with the heat off (55° in bedroom).

Snuggling with the iBook, guinea pigs, and hot tea simultaneously.

Getting all homework done during school hours (as opposed to at home) every day.

More to come...

You ask me for a hamburger.

I thought you were all some sick bastards for a second there.... I thought I had clicked on the "annoying things" thread and people were saying stuff like having 6 hours left before having to get up, finding out it's the first day of summer, etc. I thought "damn, these are some sick fucks."

Jif Extra-Crunchy Peanut Butter spread on top of Keebler Deluxe Grahams.

Finishing a long book that you've been struggling through, and not being disappointed with the ending.

Going for a walk after a day's long rain during spring or autumn.

Getting a compliment for anything you've cooked from scratch.

Finding a nice shirt in the back of your closet that you'd forgotten about, but it still fits, and still looks good.

Good mixtapes.

Catching something particularly cool on PBS by complete accident.

Guess our wishes don't do dishes or brake repairs...

Not so much the injury itself, but when injuries heal at a much faster speed than expected

Pressure-cooked meat

Hearing your favorite song through high-quality headphones in a comfy chair with your eyes shut

Brand new microfleece

Falling asleep, then waking up later realizing you're nuzzled into someone you love

Rearranging the furniture and realizing the room feels like a whole new place

Authentic Nova Scotia bagpipe innards

Agreeing with someone.

Really, really flat landscapes.

Getting whiskey drunk.

Washing my face after a long day.

Sitting down with a long distance friend for a face-to-face talk.

My mom's afghans.

Going on a long run and forgetting, until you get back, that you have work to do or other obligations to handle.

Sunday morning coffee and football in HD.

My automatic garage door broke a spring, crashed to the floor, and imprisoned my car in the garage on Christmas Day a few years ago. *I* was basically imprisoned too, since, if I want to go anywhere, I have to drive. I called for emergency service, and the repair guy came out to release me and my car from imprisonment. Since it was a major national holiday, it cost me an absolute bundle! But, I just had to do it.

What a feeling of freedom, to know that I wasn't trapped anymore against my will. I really, really, *REALLY* don't like being forced into any situation against my will. So, being released into the world again was a wondrous feeling.

When I show up at football games, get in line for a beverage, and the woman behind the counter smiles and hands me a Miller Genuine Draft without my asking. (The 'down' side to this is when I want to reform and just order a bottle of water, I hate to hurt her feelings and refuse the beer, particularly since she has already taken the cap off the bottle by the time I arrive at the counter.)

This is a bittersweet feeling, because of course it 'will' end; but it's nice to savor the pleasure for as long as possible.

Oh, yeah, that's definitely nice. With the prospect of the *entire* summer wide open and free. A semi-converse to this is driving to work and finding no cars in the parking lot because...

One time, the machine at work started putting out a bunch of nickels everytime you pushed the coin-return button. I called and reported it to the vending guy, though; but the 'idea' of it handing out free money would have been kind of cool, if I hadn't been so honest.

I don't remember this thread either, Moogs; but it's a good one. I love seeing the small things that give people such pleasure. I have plenty of those, if only I can remember a few.

- When in my hillside beach-cottage rental in Oregon, I would sit at the table near the wrap-around windows and play a few hands of solitaire, while watching the morning or evening fog obscuring everything below. A small red neon sign was the only thing that would show through the fog. (It belonged to a tiny gourmet cafe where I loved to have *absolutely-to-die-for* grilled Chilean sea bass dinners. Mmmm, yum!). But I felt so warm and cozy in my little cottage, in contrast with all the shivery cold and damp outside, all along the Pacific Northwest coast. Ahhh, lovely.

A big bowl of mashed potato with parsley and lots of cracked black pepper - the ultimate in comfort food.

Roasted garlic.

Catching the dog trying to twist around in an effort to smell one of his own farts.

Doing a random act of kindness.

Receiving a random act of kindness.

The start-up chime after attempting a computer fix yourself and getting it right (sweetest sound in the world).

Foot massages.

Sneezing.

Rediscovering an old song from your earlier years that never would of thought of buying/downloading.

Waking up early and not being tired.

Laughing until you cry, especially over a random YouTube video or something similar.

Walking downtown in a small town around midnight/1 am with your best friends just for the fun of it.

Unboxing new gadgets.

Finding money in the pockets of pants/jackets you haven't worn in ages.

And finally, the best little thing of all: flirting. =]

I was going to post this in the videos thread but then I realized it might better fit here. Partly because this is one of those "big things" as kid, that as you get older and gain perspective, is just a little moment that these kids will always have to laugh about. (Suspending them would be a crime - they definitely deserve punishment but I think 30 hours of community service at the local shelter or whatever is a much better one).

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/8014324.stm

This is surely the most classic school prank in recorded history. Just when I'm ready to give up on America's youth as a bunch of apathetic retards, you get some truly creative-minded, ingenious-but-non-destructive kids (they could've just trashed the rooms if they were like most dumb-ass teenage pranksters)... with a pretty great sense of humor. The best part of all is that this took some planning and some *work*. This isn't spray-painting a wall... these kids had to actually hoof it quite a bit to make this thing a reality. Pranks that require planning and work, not destroying things for the sake of rebelling / destroying. Now that's quality!

American ingenuity FTW. There is hope, obi-wan!

Vegan Milky Ways.

It's been 8 years since I had a Milky Way thanks to my digestion and dairy being mutually apathetic. I used to absolutely adore them, with their rich sweet caramel and fluffy nougat. This bar has even more caramel (and it's soooooo thick and sweet) than the original. I couldn't resist the urge to lick the caramel over and over. It is so amazing to finally have a non-allergenic version of a treat that used to be such a big deal to me when I was little.

Now, if they were only not $2.25 a bar. *sigh*

Crisp, tart, dry apple cider. Hard to find. Most of the stuff sold here in North America is sweet and not good. But if you can find the real stuff, it is wonderful.

Now I just have to know. Where in Oregon was this?

My own contributions to this thread:

iTunes free songs and videos of the week

Buying an old CD that you thought you heard all the good songs off of but being pleasantly surprised

Being complemented on your handwriting and/or signature

Belly bands with foil stamping that crosses onto the actual book cover, I mean omygod that look is to die for

and i guess i've known it all along / the truth is, you have to be soft to be strong
