Ok Snow Leopard hasn't even shipped yet but we know what it's going to have so it's time to look beyond 10.6 and peer into the palantir. This thread is about technology that needs further fleshing out or new technology that should be added to 10.7.

I presume 10.7 should be a paid upgrade so there are going to need to be significant enhancements to warrant spending the money. Snow Leopard looks to be a better performing and more streamlined OS. It's going to become progressively harder for Apple to move people off of their installed OS.

My initial entry:

1. New UI with a healthy dose of Resolution Independence.
a. I expect laptops w/hirez screens and mobile devices to leverage RI most but so will
larger LCD with higher PPI.

2. Global metadata enhancements that allow for tagging.
a. I'd love to see Apple spearhead something like OpenCL for dealing with customizable
metadata that can be read on multiple platforms and filesystems.

3. ZFS or BTFS support for modern fs
a. With snapshots, checksums, pooled storage and de-dupe

4. Security virtualization
a. Sandbox everything in its own vm. Any rogue process can be quarantined at any
time.

5. Core UI
a. Finally Apple allows safe hack free theming.

Feel free to add your own.

I'd like to see zoom in-out done like it is on the iPhone (I guess this would require #1 above). I tried using the unibody trackpad's pinch-to-zoom and it wasn't anywhere near as fluid as the iPhone. In fact, it reminded me of clicking the increase/decrease font size buttons that grace website news articles.

Yeah ..I gotta admit the zooming function of the iPhone is tres cool.

Moogs ..I know after the leaks the "fun" is often gone. Maybe one day i'll ignore the hype and remember what it was like to "not know"

Voice Dictation -
a. Not only is voice dictation a must for people with disability but it represents the next
step above Voice Controls and should work well as a desktop app and iPhone app.

Snow Leopard is my kind of OS: lean and efficient and not overburdened with new features that haven't yet had the bugs worked out. ZFS is the big one on my wish-list and I'm starting to think that'll get here roughly in time for resolution independence, i.e. never.

I'm really interested in how much latitude Apple will give
Ivan Krstic and others on the security team to develop the proverbial
"better mousetrap"

A breakthrough in security is something that could take Apple to the next level and I think OS X is more poised than Windows to take advantage.

Another area where I could see Apple investing in would be more web technology.

Let's face it...there are attempts to make media on the web proprietary. Microsoft and Adobe are pushing their initiatives and the "sheeple" wonder why Apple is reticent to embrace Flash, Air and Silverlight.

I wonder if Apple would be interested in creating some sort of core technology for creating web apps based on open standards (Javascript, CSS, HTML5 and more) much like the many frameworks that exist already. Would this be Core Web and be distinct from Webkit?
