I find it ironic that Russia's last real war bankrupted them (Afghanistan), and it is most likely going to happen again.

I find it ironic that we took over the role of Imperial Invader over there. The former Soviets probably laughed their butts off at us.

The Brits did the same near the end of the 19th century. They tried to take over Afghanistan and use it as a buffer state against what they feared was Russian expansion into central Asia with a goal of challenging British rule over India.

In the end they got, quite literally, massacred.

Don't even get me started on America's unconstitutional wars.

But, that's a different subject altogether. This is about Russian comedy!

Speaking of which, yesterday (Ukraine Day), AFU special forces units shot down a SU-30, blew up an S-400 anti-aircraft site, then stormed the Crimean beach and planted the Ukrainian flag before zipping back across the Black Sea. All of that within the same few square miles, and Russia didn't know what was going on until the smoke cleared and their soldiers had gotten their pants on.

I love these guys.

Huge bump, but I had to do this. Recently saw this quote in a news story.
Quote:
As the second anniversary of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine arrives, the Russian Army is showing a remarkable capacity to take extraordinary punishment and regenerate itself at a pace western military leaders and experts had not anticipated.
Really? Did WWII not happen? Did they forget the Russians did the same thing then? Two years in, does anyone still think Russia/Putin is just going to throw their hands in the air and say “well we tired”! Nah guys, they are in it for the long haul, question is, are Ukraine’s so called allies?

Putin and goons are in it for the long haul.

We know Russia government way of doing things is just throwing bodies at the problem.

How long will the population tolerate it?

There is a point where they will have enough of loved ones getting maimed and killed and that will overwrite their fear of speaking out.

It is just a matter of Ukraine holding out for that.

But it is sad to see people getting killed until that happens.

It just disgusts me to see people want peace now at any cost simply because people are getting killed. Even if it means letting Russia do what it wants because people will stop dying. Some of these people would let an intruder take their house and not call the police under how they think.....

The West (and especially the US) needs to pony up. We cannot afford to let another Hitler run loose over the planet. The long-run cost will be staggering!

The US Senate has already passed an additional $60B in funding that could've already been going to Ukraine but it's stuck in the Republican-led House, and they've conveniently left for vacation without taking a vote on it. Most of the House Republicans are against it because they work for Trump and Trump works for Putin, so somehow the Dems are going to have to force Creepy Mike to bring it up for a vote on the floor. Even then, they're going to need a dozen or so Republicans to go against Trump/Putin and vote yes. We'll see how brave or craven they are when they return to session.

Of course, this is assuming Republicans don't shut the government down first.

So it goes.

People have been asking the question, how many since this war started. No sign of them cracking with a reported 300k+ casualties.

Not saying it is going to happen any time soon. Especially since a lot of the casualties are prisoners. Not many will bat an eye or revolt for that.

I could be wrong in what will cause the war to end in the sense of Russia calling uncle. But same time, I can't stand the peace at all costs people. It's literally repeating the 1930's and rewarding Hitler all over again as history likes to perceives it. If it ends the war, just let Putin have eastern Ukraine. Then in 5-10 years, it will be let Putin have central Ukraine to end the war, etc.

Agreed. We cannot go down the appeasement route. If we do the Baltic states are next.

Surely, if we've learned anything from history, it's this. Giving into/appeasing people like this only guarantees more of the same, some time later. Can anyone cite a situation where it hasn't, both at the world/political scale and in your own dealings with grade school/junior high bullies and shitheads? No, you can't.

People will get away with exactly what you allow them to.

Yes, it's unfortunate and it isn't pretty. But the idea of "educated" grown-ups thinking/believing otherwise is far worse. Ugh...
