(First off, I'm going to take an educated guess and say that this board isn't the only board we've ever had the pleasure of posting at)

Anyways, during your travels along the electronic information highway..... have you ever encountered elitism among message board members?

What do you think was the cause of said elitism?
Do you think elitism is necessary or does it detract from the average users experience? (i.e. is it a stumbling block for user enjoyment)
Was there anything done to rectify the situation?

Has there ever been cases or sightings of elitism here? (Seeing as I'm the new guy, i have to ask pertinent questions like this) Is there even elitism here? What about in the past?

Hopefully i can get some informative feedback here, that hopefully isn't of the yes/no variety...

So, get up on your soapbox, and let us hear what you've got to say!

Look at you with your 8 posts. n00b

Personally, I fail to see how addiction to online discussions can make a nerd cool. I'd say it has the opposite effect.

Message board elitism definitely exists.

No it doesn't, you pathetic little toad, now go away and blather at someone who cares.

See?

I don't think 'message board elitism' is anything new... it's just the same old same old 'are you someone the current circle/group/community has accepted?'

It's just pretty much how social circles work in most cultures.

1) Introduction
2) Sizing up
3) Hazing (teasing, inclusion in verbal roughhousing, etc)
4) Acceptance

So i guess no one received their cash bribes I placed in the mail for them yet?

Damn.

But seriously, I was sincerely looking for an arduous debate with a group of intellectuals on this matter...

Sorry, you're going to have to do real research for your master's thesis. There will be no cliffs notes version given here.

Bingo. It's not limited to message boards, it's a far reaching societal thing.

And with you Nullpunkt, we've passed stages 1 and 2 and are well into 3, as evidenced by this quote from our dear friend sunrein

And some people, we never move past stage 3, but that's usually their fault

Honestly, I think AN might have less of it than anywhere else.

I feel very comfortable, even though I don't think I'm in any particular clique or group. I get treated nicely and fairly, and I get dinged if I do something to bring it on.

But I'm not high-ranking mod/admin level of knowledge and hardcore inside scoop and infinite tech insight, but I'm not a newbie, nor do I go out of my way to start threads that I know are going to wind up getting me piled on and slammed and exist for no apparent reason.

Somewhere in the middle, I guess.

It's very casual here and not combative at all, unlike a few other boards I've been too. Some people dig that, so that's why they don't stick around here probably as much?

I think I've got everyone sized up fairly well, and I'm sure people have me figured out as well, at this point. No complaints, honestly, other than a few stupid, go-nowhere threads that pop up from time to time...

It would be a bit of a corruption of the word to describe what goes on here as 'elitist'...

If you're one of the oppressed, it's 'elitist'.

If you're one of the community, it's 'good judgment'.

All I've got to say is that I'm the second oldest active posting member here at AppleInside-....um wait, the background color of this board is a different color....nevermind. Go about your business, this isn't the elitism you're looking for~

Well most people who could be "elitists" here are already mods

I do look down my nose at people who have higher member numbers than me, but that's only when they beat my small post count. What's irksome to me is using first names, and that's only because I don't post enough to know them. Anywho, it happens the least over here at AN, IMHO.

Dude I was there before the revolution! And I was here after the revolution.

That's not elitist, is it?

And rarely, people move into stage 4, but slide back into 3 (permanently or repeatedly).
