The Sisters of Mercy – Floodland
Sure, not a "proper" Sisters' album by some measures, but to me Andrew was the Sisters, so if you have a beef with that, get bent . I felt like going old-school tonight, and man, I could not have picked a better album. I fucking love it. So it goes. |

Run the Jewels – Run the Jewels
I've not been a huge fan of Killer Mike, but he and my man El-P do a decent job here. It's not mindblowing like a proper El-P album, but my ass wiggled, so I suppose I have to give it some stars. Like any of these things, of course: Go into it cold. Put your headphones on. Lay back. Crank it to 11. Not kidding. So it goes. |

A belated 88th birthday to the great treasure of American Blues, Mr. B.B. King.
Here he is with the incomparable Bonnie Rait, covering the most famous funky tune from the one and only Dr. John - Right Place, Wrong Time: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cssY0VOkVWQ |

It's a bit disco. I like it though. Been a huge fan of them for years. |

2013 has been the year I've rediscovered surf/instrumental rock 'n' roll. Pretty much all I've been listening to, starting off back in the winter with the big four-disc Rhino "Cowabunga!" surf anthology, followed by additional iTunes purchases and YouTube viewing. I've discovered all these newer, current bands still doing this stuff.
Like these guys... Branching off from the music itself and learning about the bands, the instruments/gear, the early 60's surf/dance scene, etc. has been great too. Always cool to learn about all the stuff that goes along with the music as well... |

Love that. That was one of those videos from the early days of MTV that I used to like (and they used to play quite a bit).
Actually, upon watching the whole thing, this isn't the video I remember. There was an alternate...on a white back background/soundstage, with his slinking around with ankle boots, a muscle shirt and guitar. Found it! This is the one I used to see all the time. I always liked his voice. Sad that he died so young. Seems most everyone associated with the Power Station (mid-80's Duran Duran splinter group) is dead now except the two guys from Duran Duran. Robert Palmer, drummer Tony Thompson and producer/bassist Bernard Edwards (the last two were in Chic) are all dead, way before their time...heart attack, cancer and pneumonia, respectively. The National, Trouble Will Find Me.
My wife got me a record player for my birthday (yay! Analog!) and I just listened to my vinyl recording of this album. I love it even more now than before, if that's possible. |

Speaking of The National, Daughter is touring with them for the next few months, and goddamn if their album isn't just phenomenal. Having been a Cat Power/Beth Orton/MBD etc. fan since forever, she's (well, they are) right now at the near top of that list. Right up my alley for female vocals mixed with mild-modern.
Youth is beautiful, as most all of the album is, but that one in particular seems to be a fan favorite (notable since they included it on their full-length album when it was already released previously on one of the 2 (also great) EPs). So it goes. Last edited by 709 : 2014-03-05 at 14:56. |

My mind is wandering through a Passion and Warfare fueled dream thanks to Steve Vai.
For some reason I have to listen to this album at least twice a year. |

Not a huge fan of Brooklyn style chamber pop, but the musicianship, voices and arrangement chops on display here are pretty impressive. Wait for the horns before you wander off: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zW8EhsxwPJA

"Unfortunately, this video is not available in your country because it could contain music, for which we could not agree on conditions of use with GEMA."
Touche Google... That comma changes the meaning of the sentence in ways non-fully fluent speakers would never get. GEMA claims all the music. |

Google’s grammar is appalling in all kinds of high-profile places. Makes me appreciate Apple’s efforts all the more.
I can watch the video in France, and I did. You’re not missing much, billybobsky. However, I cannot tell good musicianship and arrangement chops from bad. I just like my musicians to sound good and look a bit rough around the edges. Those guys and girls are too clean and Gap-ad for me, and their sound matches their look. … engrossed in such factional acts as dreaming different dreams. |

Almost 20 years later, Fake Plastic Trees slays me. That crack in Thom Yorke's voice near the end of the song. So much emotion in that one note.

I was never a real Radiohead guy beyond a few popular songs I liked on OK Computer. I just realized I've never even heard anything off The Bends. I just got ready to listen to it now, but decided I'll treat it a little more special. I'll pour a nice whiskey tonight, sit down in a comfortable chair, throw the cans on, and absorb it properly.
I figure if a song is worth listening to 20 years later, it deserves more than a quick listen while I surf for boobs at work. |

I have legacy/nostagic performers that I've liked for as long but none that I would immediately buy. I would spend a couple hundred bucks on a ticket to see them live if they'd eve fucking tour in the southeast. I saw them once in Stone Mtn, Ga of all places. But they haven't been anywhere within 4 hours of me since. Edit: if I'm honest about radiohead's music though, they really changed character from Ok Computer on. The Bends is good but it's much more rock and roll than their later stuff. If you're going to put some headphones on, do it with ok computer. Or Kid A. Or Amnesiac. You're right on there. My first experience with RH was Pablo Honey, and I was definitely ugh. Admittedly, Creep was catchy, but the rest of the album blew. I skipped over The Bends completely because I though they were crap, but people kept harping on me to listen to OK Computer and I was like, "Fine, whatever".
It was (is) one of the greatest albums I'd ever heard in my life. I've been a fan ever since. So it goes. |

So, depending on who you believe, Tool has something coming out soon.
Tool. That's right. Fuck. Yes. I'm not holding my breath for anything, but just the thought of a new Tool album is fucking squee-worthy. To the Nth degree. [edit]: Aaaand now I'm elbows deep into Lateralus, which at this moment is the greatest fucking album on planet Earth. So it goes. Last edited by 709 : 2014-03-10 at 22:04. |

Tool for the win. Alternate rock porn, which just grows on you. I can remember hating most of the current releases thinking that they have sold out and have lost their way. So wrong. They have grown and asked us to follow them on the journey, and what a journey it is.
I also like how the band could most likely walk down the street and nobody would have a clue who they are. Also vicarious-ly (good song from Tool) listening to Queen while watching Highlander. That boy had a set of pipes on him that I think to this day still wins him fans. Might be why I also love Flash Gordon. Flash! Ahhhh! Thanks 709, now I am caught in a Tool binge. Luckily my stereo goes to 11.
Fucking awesome band with so much to say. Up their on the holy pantheon with (early) Reznor. Lyrics are crazy. Going through 10,00 Days currently and we get the "throw away" Rosetta Stoned: Quote:

Drumming on Ticks. Check out the live versions, where Danny is an octopus on the drums with eight arms and Maynard is like Gollum hidden in background.

In the Aeroplane over the Sea, Neutral Milk Hotel.
I'm a late-comer to this album, only getting it in the past few months. It's one of those albums that makes me wonder what other incredible music I've missed in my lifetime. If you haven't heard it, do yourself a favor and get it now. I was in grad school in Athens, GA from 1998-2004. I lived right up the road from these guys and never once thought to try to see them. I'm not sure they were touring or playing, but if I had only known... The internet's changed a lot in the years since so I can only imagine what it would have been like for a young, single music fan back then. I'm going to finally get a chance to see them next weekend at the Merge 25 show. I am so excited. It's a full day thing, starting at 1:00 and there are a lot of bands playing, but the headliner is NMH. The show is free for kids under 10, so both my kids will be in tow until their bed time. Photography is allowed for all but the NMH set, but I'll have to see if I can get some photos on the sly... If it's not red and showing substantial musculature, you're wearing it wrong. |

I love everything* Iggy Azalea, not gonna lie.
*except her extra Iggy Azalea she apparently keeps tucked away in her ass for photo shoots and whatnot. Seriously. That's an oddly weird fat ass. Not normal or attractive by any stretch of the imagination. Regardless, her music is giddy and oochy and I love to clean the garage to it. So it goes. |

It occurred to me a bit ago, this thing. There are no more Nick Caves. Tom Waits. David Bowies. Joan Jetts.
