Safari's market share seems to be increasing yet, for me, it seems to get worse by the day. I get the spinning beachball so often my fast cable internet connection ends up feeling like dial-up. The last pre-Tiger Safari release was extremely stable and fast but none of the Tiger versions have matched that experience. I like the integrated RSS reader and I prefer to stick with Apple apps whenever possible, but I'm starting to get fed up. Anyone else having a similar problem?

I'm in the same boat. I generally prefer using Apple's own apps because they are often better designed than third-party alternatives.

I love Safari, but this is one of the reasons I moved to using Shiira as my default browser instead. Shiira uses the exact same rendering/display engine as Safari and has a similar interface, but its performance is generally better (read: fewer spinning wait cursors) and offers a few extra features. I even built my own custom version of Shiira. You'll probably want to download a replacement the ugly default toolbar icons, though.

That points to 404s.

Shoot. I guess he removed them. That's a shame; they were really good.

I didn't want to post my own set because it's mostly just a compilation of icons copied from OmniWeb and Camino; OmniWeb is a closed-source commercial product and copyright laws apply. If anyone wants them, PM me and we'll discuss.

Do you know if there are any alternative dock icons available, too?

You can set pretty much anything to be your dock icon, it doesn't have to be Safari specific. If you wanted a picture of your face to be the Safari icon, you could do that with little trouble.

Yeah, I know. But maybe some people have already created a good looking bunch of alternative icons for Shiira ..

Ah, and another question: Is there a plugin which creates a Safari like progress bar? So that there is some blue color in the adress bar which indicates how much of the page has already been loaded ..?

Hmm.. I'm using this strange build of Firefox called Deer Park. It's built specifically for the G5 processor or something. I use it over Brad's Shiira because I get the Google toolbar (spellchecker) in a nice package. Plus it seems more responsive than Shiira, I constantly find the need to reload the page or click the source bar and hit enter using Shiira.

I do like the look of Shiira, and the side-bar thing.

EDIT: in response to yawn's question about the loading thing, I also want to know if there's a plug-in to show web loading status. That is another bone I have to pick with Shiira.
