ok, so at least twice a month we get a bird flying into our window...at least once every other month it is a fatial encounter with the dead bird lying outside...

so the questions are: what can we do to stop this? you never quite get use to the sound...you are in the other room and hear, WHHAAAPPP, and always go, "what the hell was that" and then, "oh yeah, freakin bird"...

no matter how many times it happens it is never just, WHAAAPPP, "freakin bird"...you always have that, "what the hell was that" first

anyways...second question...just how fast does a bird have to be flying to kill itself? are these just accidents or are birds using my window to commit suicide? is there a large population of depressed birds out there? (almost always it is a mourning dove...do mourning doves have especially bad eyesight? weak necks? or are they truly mourning something as they dive bomb the large sheet of glass that separates outside from inside?)

notice the fine detail of the feathers in the smack-dust:

what speed impact do you need to do to leave such a nice imprint of a wing:

it is just kinda freaky...i almost see the bird looking at me in that imprint...a small bird tear in it's eye

Whoa, that is pretty freaky! I couldn't see it at first but then I saw it...

The only thing I know about mourning doves is that they mate for life. Other than that I really don't know.

I think you can get bird stickers that are supposed to stop birds flying into your windows.

Here you go- Some more information

And these are some things you can buy

Never like to see birds hit windows, especially if they don't quite die. Never sure whether to bother taking them to the vet.

Normally have to get help from a friend:

Put a bird feeder in front of windows. Lace the seeds with good scotch. They'll thank you.

I have put up improvised bird profiles in my parent's library windows and that has stopped most birds from crashing into them... They're ugly but they work.

How about louvered blinds? Just a slight angle to the blinds might remove the the false reflection of "the yard beyond". I'd feel like an ass if my house was killing birds. Hope you solve this one!

We have that happen at my house with gold finches. Not nearly that big of a bird print when they hit. I've never really found anything yet that works consistantly, although I haven't done the bird outline sticker things yet. It's only two or three a year, and those stickers are annoying to look at.

Awwww....

But they're so sweet and pretty.

Because the Goldfinch will supplement its summer diet with various insects, it is a beneficial little bird. With its brilliant golden color and seemingly endless array of cheerful notes, the American Goldfinch offers a beam of sunshine on even the gloomiest winter day.
