I am so tempted to load up F@H on the bank of G5's that we have here at work and let them crunch over the long weekend, but a couple of years ago when I was on the MacNN RC5 team I did something similar and my boss was not amused.

actually, unlike RC5 (cash reward) folding@home is for charity/research basically. you could run it by him, see what he thinks. it's always better to ask first before intsalling this kind of stuff.

Damnit, Murbot is already ahead of me. He must be leaving his machine running idle with nothing but Folding active! Foul I say! All self-respecting folders just let the app run in the background while other useful things are being done.

This protein I'm working on now must be a big-ass mama as it's taking a lot longer than the last one did.

On to Protein #3 (almost 30% done)... still haven't left my machine on all through the night though.

I looked at teh rankings and there are *several* Mac-centric teams on that list. MacAddict, MacNN, OS X, MacRumors and Apple themselves. We got some catching up to do people.

how long does it take a DP 2.0 g5 to fold a protein(average)?

Hard to say because I think some are more complex than others (?) and I never leave my machine idle for more than a half-hour or so. I have the version of the app that just runs in the background and sops up whatever processor cycles are available (low priority).

But when I shut all the other apps off and let it run in the foreground it seems to speed along pretty quick. I dunno... maybe a full protein could be done in 4-6 hours if I left it alone that long?

Guilt notice: some of you guys who signed up (?) must not have run the app for the first time because there are still only five people listed. We need more CPUs in action!

or they signed on with Team MacOSX. (#1 mac folding team. woo hoo).

no matter who you fold for, everyone wins though. it's best to always keep that in mind, for those (like me) who can get competitive.

I still can't figure out how to change my team from 'team mac os x' to 'team applenova'?

Assuming you're on OS X:
- In the F@H app, go to preferences.
- Click the Identy tab and where it says Team Number, type in 39160

Our team number is 39160 and if you start folding for us, we will rule!

I know what you mean!
I saw Omega within 10 WU's of me and threw another processor into the fray.

I've had some WU's take up to 18 hours - and that's with nothing else running.
Some are bigger (and take longer) than others, but it looks like that the size of your WU is taken into account from what I've been observing from my score.
I'm guessing that you get more points once you process a larger protein.

What's the deal if a WU does not get registered?

Hahaaa! Moogs passes Omega and Murbot for the #2 spot overnight. I sense much folding in my machine's future.

BTW, I left my machine running idle from shortly after my last post, till now (about 10 hours) and it folded two full proteins basically. So my 4-6 estimate seems about right, though who knows if I have downloaded one of those monsters Drew is talking about.

[Edit - holy shit, I think the one I'm working on now is a monster. I did the protein preview thing and it looks like a gigantic mass of bathtub bubbles. This one could take a while. Started what I think was an hour ago. Where is the server clock based? It can't be Stanford because I'm two hours ahead of them and it says it was downloaded on Sept 5 at 11:57 am... that would be Nova Scotia time or something.

...into the light of a dark black night.

See above for the GUI instruction; on the CLI all you need to do is add the argument -config, and reset any/all of the settings you feel like.

Btw: I'm in, although I probably won't show up for a few days.

Are you actually behind a proxy server? If not, leave the setting off.

It might just be that the F@h servers are fubar atm — they occasionally crash and burn under the load. Just leave the app running and see if it eventually connects.

If you're using a dual processor machine run InCrease instead of the fah client. It'll easily setup to run two processes to use both cpus.

Nope, EmC is EmC. I'm staph (honest!). I probably won't show up until around lunchtime tomorrow at the rate the current WU is going.

Yes and yes. Although, it is hard to let my TiBook do it for so long it gets hot and it scares me and my nuts. I have a two desktops that I use for gaming and file serving running, and another P4 at the office crunching away over the weekend.
