I just got the most recent ibook and I am completely confused how to play my .avi file.

I downloaded 3ivx D4 4.5.1, but it didn't come with an executable program. I also downloaded Divx Doctor II, but the .sit file from the download doesn't work on my computer. It keeps saying it's in unrecognizable program and I need to choose an application to execute the file.

Please Help.

Go to www.macupdate.com and download a program called VLC. It's a freeware app. that seems to do a much better job than quicktime at playing various .avi formats.

The .sit file is a Stuffit compression format and you can get Stuffit from the Macupdate site too.

And just as an FYI, if you wanted to play the .avi with Quicktime you can convert the file with a program called Divx Doctor II (which can also be found on macupdate).

I always thought Macs could open .sit files right out of the box. I had to do this same thing with my new iBook (first experience with Tiger) when a downloaded .sitx file wouldn't automatically decompress.

Tiger was the first OS version not to come with Stuffit by default.

Apple's stopped shipping Stuffit Express by default, just like they stopped shipping IE.

.zip, .dmg, et al have finally replaced .sit.
