I couldn't help but notice that there are almost 10,000 members here on AppleNova, with that magic number coming soon. I know they're not all active members (and macgeek must be around 10 of that total ), but I think that's quite an achievement since the site is only 2.5 years young. Congratulations Brad et al, and keep up the good work, and here's to 10,000 more!

Wait a minute... after watching Speculation & Rumors for a while, do we really want 10,000 more of those?

All in all, you guys have done a great job running this machine. Still a fun place to visit, even if I do drop off the face of the earth when school comes 'round. Keep up the good work!

Speaking of macgeek, I stumbled upon this thread the other day and was immediately reminded of him.

The OP (emega) is hilarious and I actually suspected that it might be macgeek, you can pretty much skip most of the other posters comments.

He still posts over at the MacNN forums.

But let's digress and celebrate the milestone before us.

did a quick search and only 500+ users have posted more than 50 times. It puts it a bit more in perspective as to the active userbase, but still not an entirely accurate number.
anybody have stats on how many non registerd users visit? exluding bots?

Edit: lol, 4100 members have never posted once!

I've been planning on starting this very thread for weeks now. I shouldn't have waited for member no. 9,990...

That seems to be a more accurate listing of active members, as best a formula can come up with, anyway.

I really have nothing to put here, but I feel it's rather strange to not have one.

The problem is we do have a lot of "active" members who just don't post much, if ever.

However, you check their accounts and there are ones that registered years ago but logged in two days ago. Those people are obviously still stopping by, but they don't have the posts to show it.

I wouldn't really call them active. Just lurkers who registered and never deleted the cookie.

I don't think of someone as active unless they've posted once a week for the last two or three months. Some of us post a lot more than that (I've had days in double digits this month) and others post very little (I've also had days that I didn't even sign on this month). Still, I'd consider somebody active if they posted once a week on average.

Well, I know I have too much free time some days. Those are the days I post 15-20 times.

Then again, there are members where 15-20 times would be a downturn.

Well, I'd agree with alc that they are 'indeed' active if they check by on a regular basis to read the boards, even if they don't post. I am amazed at how shy some people are, that they seem so reluctant to post, and don't get around to doing so literally for 'years'.

Perhaps they are terrified that they will inadvertently post a spelling error and become scarred for life by adverse comments about it.

We had another female mod here for a couple of weeks some time back; but she spelled the word 'furry' as 'fury' in one post (or maybe it was the other way around), and a regular member called her on it. I think she then felt rather uncomfortable with the hazards of posting here, and just sort of drifted away. I could be wrong about that, but that was my impression.

I think we already have a form of 'survival of the fittest'.

Or perhaps that should be 'survival of those with the thickest skin'.

On some days, under such criteria, I myself am barely squeaking by.

Not with murbot lurking around.

EDIT: Also not a good place for people with a big ego and a bad attitude. They're liable to get shot down, and sometimes it gets ugly. Perhaps I was excessively hostile, but that guy asked for it.

OK so I'm watching the numbers tick over. I need to know why the number of members doesn't equal the latest member's user id. To wit:

But Steve Runion's uid is 9996.

Is the difference because of the confirmation period thingy? Have some members been deleted but their uids not reallocated? Are there 6 imaginary members? Will the 10,000th member be the member with uid 10,000 or the 10,000th member as the crow flies, so to speak? Can't the forum software count? Is everything going to break when we hit 10,000 sort of like AN's own mini-Y2K or something? Should I be stocking up on bottled water and tinned food? How am I supposed to know who to congratulate for being the 10,000th member?

Bother.

Without knowing anything about vBulletin, that would be my guess. It's all in a database, where UIDs are assigned starting from 1, and counting up. That sequence never resets itself to reclaim deleted UIDs, so if six users have been deleted over time, you'd see UID 9996 with only 9990 users registered.

As the crow flies, I'd say. That is, it's going to be the "newest member" when the member count hits 10,000.

Yep, but it only counts up from the day it started at 1.

Doubtful, but it might if we should ever have 2,147,483,647 members. But if that happens, we probably have other problems.

Something like I said above, whoever's listed when the member count hits 10,000.
