I use a digital voice recorder to record interviews for articles, and I export them to my MacBook in MP3 format. It works great, but I get tired of having to play it in iTunes, pausing every few seconds so I can catch up typing when I'm taking transcripts of the interviews.
I'm looking for an application that will play the interviews back at 1/2 or even 3/4 speed so I can keep up while transcripting. I found Amazing Slow Downer, but it's $45 for a license, which I can't swing right now, plus it's geared toward musicians, so it is a lot more complex than I need. Is there any freeware out there that can slow down voice recordings? Can Garage Band do this? |

Djay is a free program that does all types of cool things, including slowing down tempo and changing pitch. You can also remix songs with it.

Quicktime can even do this. Hit Window in the menu bar, and choose A/V Controls. You can adjust playback speed there. Only thing is, I don't know if you have to own pro or now. I own QT pro so I don't know if it works or not without.

Wow, three recommendations so quickly. That's why I love this place.
Thanks a lot for the recommendations, guys. I'll check them out with my interviews next week. |

Amadeus II can also change speed and pitch. It's shareware, but it will let you save and export for a trial period.
The open-source editor Audacity can change pitch and speed independent of each other too. The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. So it can change speed without changing pitch? I think I might have a winner.

Both can, yes.
In Amadeus II, it's Effects -> Change Pitch and Speed. In Audacity, it's Effect -> Change Tempo. Personally, I much prefer Amadeus II, but Audacity will work just fine on a shoestring budget.
