So my external HDD doesn't work anymore. At least, not as it should.
I'm getting an error, don't have it with me now but it's about the file structure that is corrupted or something. It says that I won't be able to write it, that it will mount in read only and that I should copy my data to format the drive as soon as possible. I can't use disk utility to repair it. I think I tried the check disk option but I think it failed. Anyway. I wanted to do a fsck -fy on that disk in single user mode. I didn't know how to... Is there any chances that could fix it ? If so, How do I do ? I really don't want to backup as I don't have the 450gb needed to copy my data. I played a little bit in single user mode but couldn't see my disk. I went to /Volumes/ but only my local HDDs showed up. Thx for your help guys. This is kind of... critical MP Dave Mustaine :"God created whammy bars for people who don't know how to solo." |

#1 make a backup. Just have to trust me on that. I've lost 500GB easily but being impatient.
2) I'd suggest DiskWarrior. that is a freaking good program. other option: make a backup, test backup, and reformat the sucker. I don't like corruption. |

I agree with Ebby's suggestion.
DiskWarrior has saved a couple of hard drives of mine. |

I have had the exact same symptoms as you twice on the same external drive. I have this awful cheap USB SATA enclosure, and it's cranky sometimes.
DiskWarrior saved it the second time, but not the first. The first time I had this message when I connected the drive, I tried DiskWarrior, and although it was able to rebuild the disk, it couldn't write the rebuilt information and failed. I had to backup & format. The second time, the same operation in DW worked fine, and the disk was good as new. Give it a go. Interestingly, my firewire disks have been fine for years. ...and all the wolves were found upside-down in a box! |

Thx for the DiskWarrior suggestion. I'll give it a shot this morning. I totally forgot about this little software. I heard good things about it. Hope it can fix mine. I'll tell you if it worked or not...

OMFG !! DiskWarrior repaired my drive. Thx a lot guys !!
Code:
• 1 folder had a directory entry with an incorrect flag that was repaired.
• The Root creation date was repaired.
• Incorrect values in the Volume Information were repaired.
• Critical values in the Volume Information were incorrect and were repaired. |

Yeah, DiskWarrior saved two of my drives too. It's always worked for me. Downloaded it after paying and had them send me a disk. Well worth the money.
