Hi All,

I had a Macbook Pro that just whined too loud. Are the people who have the MacBook experiencing the same problems?

Thanks.

Regards,

Never had it whine. So far I can't even get fan noise out of it. The only noise thus far is from the superdrive playing discs and such. It is very quiet!

there haven't been any reports of the whine (that I've seen), which is encouraging, since they are using the same processor.

in other news... any reports of the whine with the speed bumped MBPs?

My TV: 20" iMac G5 2.1 / 1.5gb RAM

looking encouraging indeed... might make a purchase tomorrow...

it will also be interesting to see the reports of the revised (speed bumped) MBP's...

Just curious... Would the new batch of MBP's just use the same logic boards only getting rid of the 1.83 version? is the X1600 video card built into the logic board? if not then technically they can use the same logic boards and hence no net new logic boards?

Thanks.

If you get a mbp today factory refurbished, there are NO whine/moo/hiss/heat issues.

My friend Adam purchased his last week. It runs cooler than his 15" powerbook. It runs quieter than his Powerbook, it's infinitely brighter than his powerbook, and it is blistering fast.

I have no whine on my new 2.16 GHz 17" MBP (bought on release - shipped a little under 2 weeks ago).

I have a faint whine on my MacBook Pro and it certainly gets hot. It's a 1.83GHz model bought last week. Hrmph.

these are the two reports I could find on a macBook whine:

***

this thread topic speaks of a whine, but it seems to be coming from the power adapter
Quote:
I've had my MacBook for about 3 hours, and I just noticed that a WHINE noise is emitting from....
get this, it's coming from the AC Adapter! I owned a MacBook Pro (not anymore) and the noise is identical to the MBP whine. But seriously, a whine shouldn't be coming from my fucking AC adapter. It disappears if I unplug the AC adapter. Luckily the computer itself isn't making a noise like the MBP. I'm going to talk to applecare tomorrow...

edit: running photo booth makes the noise go away o.O
This is freaking me out!! Why is a noise coming from my AC adapter

edit2: So it turned out the loud noise was a capacitor or something breaking in. It has since gone away. Good news for everyone!

edit3: the noise hath returneth.
and there is a thread on the aplle.com forum where more people had this problem...

***

this article about the black paint flaking off the macBook ends with:
Quote:
I will definitely hold off on any spontaneous Apple purchases for a while. After the heat and the whine of my MacBook Pro, and the weird flaky skin on the new MacBooks, I am content to let others find the bugs for me before I relinquish control of my wallet to Apple again. No use purchasing another machine that has the potential of mutating any future children I might have, or depositing weird computer dandruff on my workspace.

Oh, and did I mention it also produces a very familiar electronic whine?
I'm guessing this is the power-supply whine as well, since the guy didn't home test it, but only looked at a macBook in the store.

I returned my MacBook today. It had the whine. On battery, it wasn't too bad, but when it's plugged in, the whine was driving me crazy. So much for quality control...

Which model did you have shatteringglass and where was the whine coming from?

I had a white 2.0 GHz model. It wasn't loud, but after a while, it just got to me. I guess I'll wait to buy another one after all this clears up.

this thread on apple.com is all about the whine, and they are going into details a lot. it also shows it's not limited to just one model:
Quote:
My feeling having seen a store full of MacBooks today is that they all whine, but not very loudly. The MacBook Pros all seem to be much better behaved than before when I pull the AC cable out, and the battery whine is now quieter than the AC whine. But the AC whine on the MBP is worse than the MacBook, no question.

Bottom line, I don't think other people in, say, a library, would notice a MacBook, but they will still notice a MacBook Pro.
one of the entries in this thread shows a link to a page where there are sound recordings of the whining noise

I dunno, if apple would do a trade for another macBook, or money back when I return with a whining macBook, I would buy it now. but I'm just too scared that I'll end up with a noisy laptop. one of the main things I need it for is sound recording. and I'll also be recording very quiet sounds...

this thread is about the whine too, although it's a bit shorter and less elaborate

what should I do?
*goes off singing to a clash tune: 'should I buy or should I wait now...'

Have you guys tried the latest firmware, maybe they will come later for the Macbooks.

I had whine and over-heating problems with my MBP (purchased on the same day apple launched MB ) but there is no whine now and mild heating issue after I made the firmware update.

It gets a little warm now after an hour of use but it seems normal. The only problem for me now is that I am getting mild electirc shocks from my MBP when it is been charged. I don't know if the problem is on my end because I used the same power-supply for my iBook and never felt anything.

Definitely something wrong with your unit or your power supply (e.g. outlet) - my MBP does not shock me! If it did, it'd be going right back for replacement.

Hi

I get this shocks only when the MBP is been charged and the whine is still there ..I am getting this shocks from the area near the trackpad and near the ports on the edge (more severe.) I am using a surge protector and a three prong electric plug.

take it to the apple store, let them have a look at it, then try to get a replacement.

On my own 3rd MacBook (first for a broken fan, then a stuck trackpad button) and this one definitely has the whine/buzz when plugged in. I haven't tried it unplugged yet. I can't hear it at all, however, unless I put my ear up to the left side of the computer. Granted, my hearing is not great, but I couldn't even hear it in the middle of the night last night even though I could clearly hear the fan doing the "mooing" that gets triggered at ~67 degrees C, something that normal daytime ambient noise has made inaudible right now.

My 1 GHz titanium makes a similar, but certainly different, sound sometimes when scrolling.

I am getting a faint whine when it is plugged in. I am getting rather annoyed actually by the whine. Although when it is unplugged the whine disappears. Does anyone have an idea of when this would be fixed.

EDIT: It's actually fairy low pitched when it's unplugged...but you won't notice it unless you listen hard enough.

ok, this is freaking me out!!!

as you can see, I've posted before in this thread BEFORE I bought a macBook, because I was scared of this.

then I bought one, and guess what? it had a whine..
not loud though, not louder with the power plugged in, and it went away when I had photobooth open, or when I was doing stuff that kicked the CPU up a bit..
luckily I had other problems with it, so I got a refund and a chance to buy a revB blackBook in the states 2 weeks ago.

now, what would be the odds to have it happen again? but it did!
I have the same noise coming from the left top side of the macBook, but now it gets louder when it is plugged in.. so the annoyance has even doubled for me now.
the unplugged sound is only noticeable in a quiet room, but that is when I most use the laptop!!!

howcome hardly anybody has complained about this, and both macBooks I owned have it? has the source of the problem been found? is there a solution? last time my macbook layed on the shelf of the apple outlet for a month before they even tried to order a spare part, by that time I had already struck the refund deal with apple itself, and didn't wait to "get it fixed". (we don't have apple stores in holland). and I really don't want to be without one that long again.

so before I pull out the rest of my hair:
does anybody know if a source or solution has been found yet?
it is really doing my head in... :'(

on the apple.com forums I found these two things:

Quote:
Finally! Today i received my MBP again and guess what.. Its gone!
The LMB has been replaced and now the whine is gone. I love it!
what is a LMB ???

and I also found this "fix":
Quote:
My Macbook whines. To stop it I use Photobooth trick. Open it up, force quit it then put macbook to sleep, wake it up after few seconds and no whine at all. After restarting system have to do it again. It works for me everytime but only after force quit, normal application closing doesn't do the same effect.
and for now it seems to work, but just as this guy, I wonder if:
Quote:
..if doing this (opening and force-quitting photobooth, then putting to sleep for a few seconds before 'waking') has any drawbacks, such as increased wear and tear or power usage, or somehow being bad for the system ("force quit" sounds dramatic, and something one does only when necessary, though I have no clue about these things...)
any ideas?
