For those of you that are coffee/expresso drinkers, how many shots do you usually get in your coffee?

I'm at ~1 now, but I think I'll have to graduate to 2 shortly.

I used to live on quad tall mochas.

It's basically caffeine syrup. Mmmm....

Now I drink about two cups of french press a day.

Is the french press significantly more caffeinated than regular coffee?

Depends on how long you let it sit.

Caffeine is water soluble, the esters and oils that give coffee its flavor are heat-released. The longer you let the water and grounds sit, the more caffeine will eventually be extracted. That's why hitting fine grounds with rapid steam results in an extremely concentrated, but not highly caffeinated, brew of espresso.

The first cup of french press isn't that bad, caffeine-wise, but if you let it sit for a while and then come back for a cup later, it can jazz you right up.

Neat. I never thought about the solubility of caffeine.

Now, for the next question: could you (or anyone else) recommend a good french press? I have no idea what to look for, and keep in mind that I'm not going to break the bank.

I have a Bodum that was like $20 or so. Makes about 32oz or so. (Four std cups, or two real ones.)

I don't think there's a particularly substantial difference in quality between the absolute cheapest and the most expensive. The more expensive ones look cooler, of course.

So I generally just nip down to Woolies and pick up the $5 variety.

Just make sure the glass is solid, preferably borosilicate (Pyrex). Tossing near-boiling water into a thin walled normal-glass vessel is a bit touchy unless it's made to take the heat.

I've had a triple shot from Starbucks once. That was my most productive day at work yet

I've gotten hooked on a S. American coffee drink, carajillo. It's coffee, anise, cinnamon, and a touch of sugar. The anise really makes it. I just picked up some Ricard, I'll have to try that and see if I can't come up with a slightly more fun version.

At least a double, and without any heinous non-coffee additives.

But usually I prefer a plain cup of black coffee, filter of press.
