After waiting an extra two weeks for some strange loan of theirs to fund, my sale of one of my houses has closed. I've sold it at what I believe to be the top of the market out here in California and now have a lot of extra money with which to invest/buy some toys.

Suggestions are welcome.

Toys for Tots perhaps?

Side note: Yikes! It looks like that website was designed in 1998.

I second Toys for Tots. A great program...and I've had several years of first-hand, up-close dealings with it.

Sorry guys, but I think the "toys" to which he refers are the kind *big* boys like to play with.

How about a cruise or a dream trip to somewhere warm over your winter recess?

Costa Rica, Rio, Australia, etc?

^^^^^^^^^^^

Carol's got the right ideal. I already give several thousand dollars a year to charities and am pondering some big boy toys.

In that case perhaps you could afford a copy of Kant's Groundwork of the Metaphysics of Morals?

Kant is a nut, don't waste your time on him. Especially on the Foundations(Groundword).

How about a new sport car?

Not sure if you have quite the cash for this, but...

The Aerial Atom. As light a frame as possible (half a ton) combined with a 160hp (or 220hp) Honda engine. It only has two seats and no trunk, of course, but it looks like a ton of fun to drive. It rivals hyper-expensive European supercars in acceleration and handling performance. But it's 60 grand, which is kind of ridiculously expensive for a car that's probably not even street legal (it doesn't even have a windscreen). It's more of a souped-up go-kart than a car.

There are obviously a lot more practical (or at least less expensive) ways to get basically the same thing. I live in a state full of hicks so there are ATVs, dirt bikes, and snowmobiles everywhere. And there are much more practical cars that cost far less and still have more go than you could ever fully make use of on the street (and might actually be able to double as a practical family/grocery-carrier car). The Pontiac GTO, Volkswagen Golf GTI, Ford Focus SVT, and many others come to mind. Most auto manufacturers now make performance versions of many or most of their cars.

This is assuming you want a car, of course... probably because that's what I would buy if I had the money! But like Carol suggests, a tropical cruise also sounds like it would be a lot of fun, and it's something both you and your wife can enjoy. Heh... and it costs a lot less than a car of course.

Dorian, I haven't read that book, but are you implying that Nick isn't entitled to enjoy the profits of his investment? That his enjoyment would be somehow immoral?

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but that's the impression I get.

I think Nick has worked hard over many years to accomplish his goals. He has probably given thousands of dollars to charity over time. Plus, his normal job is a relatively altruistic one, and is not especially well-paid in the US. I imagine he has done more to help others on this earth in just a few years than most people would in ten lifetimes.

That he has managed to have the foresight to save money and then invest on the side is a tribute to his energy and his willingness to take risks.

We are given the intellect and will to accomplish many things in life. Bettering one's standard of living and enjoying life's more material pleasures should surely be considered part of the whole mosaic of what it is to be human.

My take on Carol's and Dorian's comments:

Personally, I took Dorian's comment to mean that Trumpetman should think for himself (Kant's "autonomy" and whatnot). If so, he has a point. More likely Dorian referenced it for some other unimportant reason that only he knows and that the rest of us don't care about, which is why his comment was safe to ignore.

I don't know what in Metaphysic of Morals would be taken to say "someone shouldn't spend money." Maybe someone could point it out to me.

Anyway, my suggestion: if you can't think of what to spend money on, reinvest it and/or spend it on kids. In the meantime, get some interests and hobbies like other people do. It builds character.

You can buy some really cheap military hardware in Russia!
We are going next week to pick up a new plane for our Drop Zone!

Seriously the deals are incredible! A Russian plane that is being sold in the US right now for 120,000 USD can be picked up for close to USD10,000 in Russia.
Admittedly the guy selling it in the US is trying it on, but if he had gone for 50,000USD I may well have been interested before I got an education from my business patner..

Go buy a tank, or a helicopter, or a jet!

I'll be selling my house soon. $800,000 for a 3 bedroom house. I love California real estate. (Especially since we're moving to Texas)

Anyways, I plan on building a home theater in the new house. I haven't decided on anything yet, but from the demoing I've done so far, ceiling-mounted projector is definitely a possibility.

(100" screen if the room is big enough!)

Hi Windswept, and others,

I was simply throwing an idea into the mix, like everyone else. My point is that spending money on worthy causes maximises utility. Buying consumer goods does not. This is true whether Trumpetman "deserves" his money or not (I certainly have no reason to think he hasn't worked hard, so must assume he has).

I understand the two are best when taken in combination....

If i were you, I'd spend the money on upgrading the fittings in your house. Make that place look sweet. If that includes a HD Plasma, so be it.

Kant isn't a utilitarian. I don't know where you would get that idea.

Depending on how much it is, I'd invest.

2. Kant's Categorical Imperative is incompatible with utilitarianism so of course he wasn't a utilitarian.

3. I doubt either Bentham or Kant would have bought a sports car had they run into a bit of spare cash.
