So uh, did anyone feel the quake at like 5:30 AM Eastern this morning?
http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/04/18/ill...ake/index.html I woke up at like 6 to use the bathroom, and my parents were watching TV. They were like "We had an earthquake!!!" I was like "...k" and went back to sleep. Didn't register it. Was told about it a bit ago when I got up, and I was like WTF? Shit like this just doesn't happen around here... |

Wanna bet?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Madrid_Seismic_Zone New Madrid, MO - site of the largest earthquake, in the Continental US, in recorded American history. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_earthquakes The Pacific coast may be on the Ring of Fire, but the midwest is sitting atop the Plate of JESUS CHRIST THE EARTH IS BLOWING UP!!! Yeah, if I remember my geology course correctly, you have to get further into the prairies to get into seismic-free territory. That's why they build the synchrotron at the University of Saskatchewan!

I mentioned this in the minor news thread. I probably would have noticed more, but I had just gotten out of bed, so I was pretty much out of it. I did notice the walls in my apartment shake briefly, but that was all.
I grew up almost two hours south of here, and those little tremors happened a lot. I didn't think anything of it until I saw the report on the news that it was a 5.4 (later adjusted to 5.2) |

It was a couple hundred miles south of Chicago... Probably was pretty powerful around the University of Illinois area I imagine. I felt it here on the Illinois-Wisconsin border but just barely. Rattled one of our cabinets a little bit. I've felt a lot worse tremors in Japan but it's a nice reminder that there's a big ole earthquake fault that runs right through Illinois / the Mississippi valley area. You just don't hear about it very often, but it's had some nasty handywork to its credit over the last 150 years or so. Mostly back when there were no huge cities or newsbroadcasts. ...into the light of a dark black night. |

Yes, yes, Eugene, continental US. And before you say anything, the 1700 Cascadia quake a) didn't have anyone making written records, the estimates on the intensity were made from geologic studies, and b) is a little before settlement by the palefaces, so it isn't generally considered in the scope of 'recorded American history'.

Er, that page says 'Since 1900'. Pre-1900 isn't considered in the scope of 'ever recorded' I guess? Last edited by Kickaha : 2008-04-18 at 19:24. |

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1755_Lisbon_earthquake ^^ That's the only pre-1900 quake from the wikipedia article you linked that is of equivalent magnitude to the 13 on the USGS link. |

Again, I say...
Eugene, just accept I left out the word 'continental'. I have sinned horribly. The rest of this is just silly, and getting worse. |
