A few months ago I took my 3Gs to the Apple Store and they confirmed that I'm qualified for the battery replacement program.

I'd like to go ahead and wipe the phone before I take it in to them, but will that be a problem for them?

I'd really rather not have any of my data available, pedestrian as it may be.

Is there any reason why they wouldn't want me to wipe it ahead of time?

They ought to be able to check it to see that it's mine, right?

What about the SIM card? I assume I leave it in and they swap it out?

I don't see any reason they'd care about whether your data is on there; they can check that it's yours based on the serial number, which never gets wiped. Still, why not just ask them?

I called and asked and the girl on the phone didn't seem to understand my question, and just said a few times "it's okay, they'll wipe it for you" instead of "oh sure, whatever you want". I think I'll take it in there wiped and deal with things from there. Easier to ask for forgiveness than ask for permission.

Or for persimmons, for that matter.

I wouldn't bring anything in there that you don't want people to see. When my wife worked there guys in the back would spend time looking through people's hard drives. Usually looking for porn.

Can’t you wipe the phone from a menu option in under a minute? That’s what I did with my iPod touch (running iOS 6) when I sold it. If that’s possible, you could take the phone into the Apple Store and wipe it before handing it over – after getting an okay on that.

That is correct. When I swapped out my iPhone 5, I did that right there at the counter before I handed over the phone. They actually told me to do it.

You go to:
Settings > General > Reset, and then just Erase All Content and Settings.

Every time I've swapped an iDevice I end up wiping it from home using Find My Phone. Basically they are all always paired to Apple's in store WiFi and I just don't think about it until after the fact. They also are always locked so they have to spend time getting to the data without the pin which they don't really have the luxury to do.
