I keep trying to go back to Safari, but I just can't get on with it. I wish I could use it: I wish I could take advantage of the inline edits on this and other forums: I wish I could get PDFs opened in the browser. But no, I can't, and here's why:
Safari runs dog-slow on my machine. To be honest, so does Omniweb. But the primary problem is this: I like to hit a link, and while the page loads, flip to another tab and read that while I wait. Omniweb lets me do that, no problem. But Safari beachballs every time I try. And that just pisses me right off. That's the killer feature that has forced my hand on browser choice. Does this happen to you? Shall i just give up and hope for Omni to update the Omniweb engine instead? I've tried "resetting Safari" - didn't help. I'm running Safari 2.0.3 on 10.4.4 on a 17" PBook 1.33ghz with 1gb ram. |

Are you using any plugins like Saft, AcidSearch, PithHelmet, etc. with Safari? PithHelmet used to cause massive slowdowns with Safari, but that has generally been resolved. Still, it doesn't hurt to try removing them.
Has Adobe installed any plugins for viewing PDFs and such? Check the Library/Internet Plug-ins folder (in the root and home Libraries) and remove it. Have you tried using the nightly builds of the newer WebKit engine for Safari? They're generally speedier in my experience; although, some builds are a little crashy. That can be remedied by simply downloading a build from a previous day. Have you tried Shiira? Like OmniWeb, it's a custom front-end to Safari's engine. Unlike OmniWeb, it uses the current system-wide engine instead of an out-of-date custom-tailored version. The quality of this board depends on the quality of the posts. The source for WebKit and related bits (yes, it's an open source project!):
http://webkit.opendarwin.org/ The developer blog: http://webkit.opendarwin.org/blog/ The downloadable nightly builds: http://nightly.webkit.org/ Keep in mind that what you're downloading is a self-contained application. It does not install the updated frameworks in the system for use by other applications. So, you can toss it to the Trash and have absolutely no ill effects. The "WebKit" application (gold-rimmed icon) is a wrapper for Safari that simply tells your standard Safari executable to launch with the special included frameworks (WebKit, JavaScriptCore, WebCore). No, that's it. As well as not letting me swap tabs when it's loading, it's crashed 3 times today.
Back to Omniweb. I lose the inline editing and in-browser PDF and video display, but at least it doesn't piss me off all day.... And no, I don't have any extensions loaded. I guess Safari just hates me! |
