I can't get online with my ibook and I don't know if my ethernet port is bad. Is there a way to test the ethernet port? Im running the hardware test right now and it doesn't seem to be picking up problems.

There's ethernet testing devices, but they're not that cheap, e.g. http://store.elementsource.com/bxforneandca.html for $46.

Before you condemn your jack try to "refresh" your IP address.

When Cox changes my IP I have had to manually "refresh" my IP address to reconnect.

That is a very bad sign. Do you have AppleCare?

One thing i just noticed was when I connect directly to the modem and reset the modem I still don't get a light. When I go into system profiler my ip address is listed along with my net mask. What in the world am I doing wrong???????

Check the pins in your iBook's jack. Make sure none of them are bent.

This really sounds like a hardware issue to me. Can you take it by an Apple store? Maybe even a friends house and see if it can get online there?

Yes, but even so, unless you are just completely out of the warranty and it's prohibitively expensive, you should have that fixed. 802.11 may not always be an option for you.

I agree with Brad, only if you are going to be using the 802.11 until you can get the money to fix your book. Think of how often there is not a WiFi connection. Or my favorite it there is a connection, but it isn't to a service you subscribe to!
