Hey,

Just noticed I'm slowly filling up my 80GB iPod Classic. Instead of buying the 160GB version I was wondering if I could buy any 1.8" drive and just open the iPod up and restore everything with iTunes?

I was looking at something like this http://fwd4.me/ITs but not sure if the iPod would be able to use it?

Thanks,

Steve.

It depends on whether your iPod currently has a single-platter or dual-platter drive. If it's single-platter, that's all you'll be able to fit in.

Is there some way I can tell if it's single or dual?

edit: Hmm, I just read that dual platter drive's in iPod's seem to be causing loads of problems, anything greater than 120GB basically, so it might not be worth the effort :-/

AFAICT, there are two 80 GB iPods; the late 2006 5G (30 and 80 GB configurations), and the late 2007 classic (80 and 160 GB configurations). If it's actually called a classic, you're probably out of lucky — the lower-end one typically has a single platter.

Hmm, so could I buy one of the current 160GB models and later on upgrade it with a 250GB/500GB drive?

No; the current ones are single-platter.

Ah ok, I guess I'll hold out and see if Apple bring out anything larger in the fall.

Thanks chucker
