I've noticed that when I alter a song in iTunes (say, to add an album image or artist tag), and then attach my iPod, those songs get updated. Does iTunes add this information to the song file itself or does it go somewhere else? Also, when the songs are updated, is a second copy put on my iPod or is the original changed?

the song files are updated. everything is included in the song's file, including album art which kinda sucks since it adds a lot to the file size having the same album cover image on 13 songs from that album

the original is replaced on your iPod

It's not that bad 'nut. Providing you are using reasonably sized images, you are only talking about adding 20-30K to a 3 to 6 meg file.

X 5,000 or 10,000 songs

You're right, it is small, but it does add up

Drag them from the iTunes window into the Finder.

Well, that makes copies of them (dragging from iTunes to the Finder).

If you want to permanently change the location that iTunes imports files, go to iTunes -> Preferences -> Advanced -> iTunes Music folder location. Keep in mind, though, that this does not actually move your existing files; it only tells iTunes to look for them somewhere else. So, before changing the location in iTunes, you should move the folder itself in the Finder.

I think you can change the location, then run "Consolidate" from the Advanced menu.

That still leaves the old files in their original location, too, though, right?

No, as far as I know, consolidating will move all files inside the current library folder, no matter where they have been before.

I'd like someone else to back me up first though. Currently can't check myself.
