Doing your own patio isn't that hard really. To avoid issues, just make sure you have a good bed of sand and grave, make sure you add control joints to any poured material, separate the pour from your foundations with a membrane or board (below the finish pavers). Hardest part is keeping thing level. Don't buy quick-cure concrete or mortar if you've never done this before; it will set too quickly. Keep the work area covered with tarp and it can always cure a little longer than you think, doesn't hurt to leave it for two weeks instead of the customary one week. Just take your time with everything.

Thanks for the tip on Angie's List guys. I'm all over it! And I wouldn't mind trying this except I'm known for not being a great carpenter type / handyman and I don't have any experience running a brick saw, etc / don't want to cut my arm off.
