How the hell do I stop intellitxt from slowing down Safari? As in, how do I keep it from displaying at all? I fucking hate it. Hate it. It's quite possibly my most hated web technology. EVER. That's more than those epileptic seizure inducing flash ads. That's more than "your computer isn't protected!!!!111!!" ads. That's more than Tina. I've got the hosts file thing done. What else can I do?

Thus far, I just 1) avoid sites that use it, since they clearly hate visitors, and 2) add the appropriate entry to /etc/hosts to block it.

I generally do, too, but when I'm googling something, I can't tell who's going to use it and who's not. There are some sites I know use it (like MacNN and HowardForums) but I still visit. For those, I use Firefox.

Hmm. I just added those lines to my hosts file and lookupd -flushcache and it didn't work. Lemme try that again.

edit: couldn't I just do a *.intellitxt.com to get all the servers?

No, I don't think /etc/hosts supports wildcards.

How do I find out the server that I should add? It looks like it works on MacNN but not on HowardForums.

What the heck is Intellitxt anyway? I'm very afraid of it because of the vast number of subdomains you've been listing. A banner ad perhaps?

It's an embedded ad, so to speak. You'll be looking at a page where a few words are highlighted within the body of text. Hover your mouse over one and a little text bubble appears with a clickable link to another site that's (supposedly) related to the original highlighted word.

They're legit, as in they're not malicious. They're a source of revenue for the site's owner. They also slow down Safari, which hesitates while the Intellitxt links and their little Javascripts load.

Personally, I fucking hate them as well, and always try to disable them with their own cookies. Hover over a linked word, click on the little question mark button in the floater window, and a new window opens to Intellitxt's site that explains what it is and has a "Click here to disable" link at the very bottom.

I'll try the methods explained here as well. These are half a step away from popup ads, IMO.

If you run firefox you can also just download the NoScript extension, which allows you to select which server's Javascript runs and which doesn't. Allows you to skip the intellitext crap without constantly updating your hosts file.

That's what I do generally but there are times I'm using Safari and I go to a site that has it. Lately FF has been mucho unstable for me (I'm running 2.0) so I've had to rely more on Safari. Plus, I surf using Netnewswire quite a bit, too, so the hosts file helps there. I just wish intellitxt.com could be annihilated. That would make me happy.

ps - I hate that FF on windows now has "Alt+s" as History.

Yes, but while wildcard support would be nice, the hosts file does have a few advantages:
1) it works regardless of browser, engine, etc. It's 100% effective.
2) it is a layer apps have to go through anyway, so it provides no performance hit. It is significantly faster than having any sort of filter pre-fetch information and decide whether to load it or not.

So, do ya think that the modified /hosts file would work better & more quickly than the usercontent.css that I've gotten from floppymoose.com?

If you want to block everything from the domain, editing the /etc/hosts file is best.

If you only want to block specific elements in a web page, using custom CSS is more effective but slower.

I just found Intellitxt on Something Awful for the first time.

Does anyone know the slight vagaries of Omniweb so that I can block it? I seem to be in the right place, but the syntax of /'s \'s and .'s is confusing me a little.

Bryson, I believe just
Code:
*\.intellitxt\.com
should do.

Thanks Chucker. In the end I worked it out, it was:
Code:
*\.intellitxt\.com/
Note the extra slash at the end.

Totally unexplained in the manual, and not obvious. Naughty Omni!

So that's the catch-all line to use? I can ditch all the .intellitxt entries that I've got so far (thanks to the ones posted here, plus a couple I had to add myself)?

Does anyone know the slight vagaries of Omniweb so that I can block it? I seem to be in the right place, but the syntax of /'s \'s and .'s is confusing me a little.
My biggest gripe with OW's ad blocking scheme is the arcane syntax. I just want to block the server, not learn how to use grep!

Well, /etc/hosts doesn't support wildcards, to my knowledge. The above will only work if you have an ad-blocker that supports regular expressions.

Someone should post a list of websites where Intellitxt appears then get Dugg, to shame the websites where it appears (unless that's already been done).
