Hi everyone,

I will shortly upgrading my powerbook in 2005, well, after MWSF anyway.
It will be my first upgrade since 1999. Just curious how often people on these boards upgrade their gear. Either Desktop or Portable.

Im in the same boat you are, but I am going to hold off until the end of summer/beginning of the next school year before I buy a new PB. My last PB was purchased in the summer of 2003.

I got my blueberry iBook in fall 1999, and upgraded to a friend's G3 iceBook in... oh, spring of 2003, maybe.

The biggest thing I need now is a larger HD, and I can get that done without buying a whole new iBook.

yeah, I'm toying with that idea too. I'd like to think that I could pick up a Revision B G5 by then but it is probably just wishful thinking on my part. As I believe you said in another post, 'life is hard'.

iMac G4 in 2002, upgraded to a 15'' PowerBook in May 2004. I'll probably update agin in late 2005 or early 2006.

Here's a history of Apple computers I've owned.

198?: Apple IIc
1992: Macintosh SE/30 (used)
1994: Performa 638CD
1997: PowerMac 8600/250
2000: PowerMac G4 Dual 500
2004: PowerBook 12"

My father ran a local computer business; so, even as a child I had my own Apple IIc and later he gave me one of his Mac SE/30s. The rest were more truly my own Macs.

The PowerBook I am currently using is a very nice machine, but I can easy see myself buying a replacement for it in just two, maybe three more years. It just doesn't "wow" me with speed and power like my last three Macs did. I suppose that may also have something to do with the fact that going from the Performa to 8600 gave a 7x chip speed boost and from the 8600 to the Dual 500 a 4x boost, among other technological advances. The PowerBook feels like just a portable version of my Dual 500. It's barely any faster, not even 2x, and has nothing else very special about it. But I digress...

Yeah, it really started when I got that Wallstreet in 2002. That was the last machine my parents gave to me after upgrading their own computers. After I got that one, I got the upgrade bug and wanted to run OS X, so I bought that dual 500. In retrospect I should have just stayed with it, but I wanted portability so I got the iBook. It was slower than the PowerMac, but I put up with it anyway, until finally I decided that I wanted a fast desktop again. I stupidly passed up the opportunity to get another nice PowerMac and bought a brand new eMac from Apple this time. I got sick of the eMac within a month or two and ended up getting a dual 450 G4 instead. I put a few upgrades into the dual 450, and eventually found someone selling a Quicksilver 733 for really cheap. I bought it and threw all my dual 450's upgrades into it, and kept it for a while. I decided I wanted a PC to use just for games and stuff, so I built a PC on the cheap using a lot of lightly used parts. For some reason I ended up using the PC all the time and I didn't mind it at all... in fact I never used the Mac even though I have been a Mac user all my life. After a couple weeks of that, I sold the Mac and used the money to buy much nicer parts for my PC. I replaced essentially the entire thing, and now I have a very nice home-built PC.

I'll probably buy another Mac sometime in the next two years. For now, though, I'm totally fine with the PC.

This 12" PB I'm on now was the first computer that I've owned by myself, like actually bought with my own money and all that. The rest of them have been family computers starting with an Apple II, Mac +, LC, 6400, Cube, and now this.

I don't upgrade a lot, I haven't been a power user until recently when I started editing video and photos and stuff like that. So my upgrades have been few and far between, but they may get closer together now.

I should add that I had been leeching off of school computer labs since starting college for the second time in '93, and also during my first stint in 89-90. Prior to that, I landed in a high school that was a technology magnet, with several million dollars' worth of computer equipment; plus my middle school was a science & tech magnet.

SO, anyway...

Among all the computers I ended up using, when it came time to graduate I shopped around as fairly as I could, and I still ended up going with Mac. In the school labs, they worked logically, and worked more often than the breeds of Windows boxes. Plus, I got more for my money with that blueberry iBook, and I've even been wireless ever since.

You could say that I "played the field" for many years before buying my own stuff.
