So I'm surprised nobody's mentioned anything about this yet:

Taiwan's Acer to acquire Gateway

My favorite part is about Gateway's stock drop from $81.50 to $1.21 over the past 8 years. Rough.

BuonRotto's quote from the RIM + Microsoft thread popped to mind when I read this:

Now mediocrity from Acer can have the eMachines touch. Woohoo!

That Fake Steve post reminds me of the headline I used in Ars #Macintosh.

Breaking News: Acer to acquire Gateway; pledges to make even shittier computers.

They might also end up getting Packard Bell too. It can't get any better!

They're still a rather large OEM in Europe and Asia/Oceania.

The Packard Bell EasyNote XS looks nice. It's based on the Via Nanobook design.

The US OEM for the Nanobook? Everex. Ew.

We resell Gateway PCs bundled with our plasma cutting machines (the PCs control the plasma torch movement across the cutting tables). Gateway has been seriously dicking us around for the last few months. Usually, we could get a shipment of 15 PCs delivered in about a week. Lately, it's been more like a month or two - maybe. The shitty part is, they gave us every excuse under the sun for why the shipments were taking so long (here's one: a bunch of hard drives went missing when they moved from Mexico). It was all complete BS. If this Acer buyout doesn't somehow make the shipments get back to normal (I don't know why it would), I'm sure we'll be done with Gateway/Acer pretty soon.

It kinda sucks for us because we really partnered-up with Gateway in a big way - it's gonna be a bitch to switch to a different vendor - but they treated us like dirt throughout this.

Ugh.
